The GOP establishment leadership is part of the one party with two wings that run this country. I doubt that Lamar Smith made the decision by himself. Boehner and Cantor probably had a role in the decision. They think that King is too extreme. If King was the ranking member then he should have become the chairman not his deputy, Gallegly. They have swithched roles now that the GOP is the majority party. This stinks. I will find out why it was made.

King has been working with the Tea Party movement. He was a big hit at the VA Tea Party convention.

Just adding a few words fixes it:

“All persons born of parents who are citizens of the United States, or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

But then, you go make the mind numbingly stupid mistake so many before have made and continue to make.

King’s bill would alter the 14th Amendment to the Constitution that declares,
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

Seriously, what part of and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, do you people not understand?

Rep. King's bill would NOT alter the 14th Amendment, it would simply ENFORCE the 14th which has been bastardized by the tyrants in black robes.

My father was an immigrant (from Nova Scotia) and my mother's family came over on the Mayflower. My Grandmother's maiden name is Alden. My father got his green card in 1960 and was drafted six months after he came to the states. He served 6 years in the navy. If we could return to a pre 1965 immigration system where people came here to work hard and serve their new country, this country would be in much better shape.

Perhaps you are right. But I tend to believe Gallegly was chosen by Smith because of their long service together on the Immigration Subcommittee before King was ever elected to Congress. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big King fan, and he would have been great. That said, before you write off Gallegly as a RINO hack and tool of the open borders leadership, read this:

I didn't say that Gallegly is a RINO hack. When the GOP was in the minority, Gallegly was the vice ranking member chairman of the subcommittee and King was the chairman. Now Smith has reversed their positions. Why? Smith didn't seem to have a problem with King as the ranking member of the subcommittee before.

Based on my personal knowledge of some of the players involved, there is more to this story. The GOP House leadership is afraid of King. They view him as an extremist in the mold of Tom Tancredo. King as chairman would hurt their misguided outreach efforts to Hispanics. And King would have a much more aggressive agenda on immigration, leagal and illegal.

I suspect Cantor is behind a lot of this. He was part of the cabal to rebrand the GOP after the 2008 elections along with McCain and Jeb Bush, i.e., the National Council for a New America. Cantor is an a$$hole who has grand political ambition. He despises the Tea Party movement and failed to show at the VA Tea Party convention despite being held in part of his district. McDonnell and Cuccinelli showed up along with a number of VA congressmen like Frank Wolf.

No, I understood perfectly. If I was the President my first priority would be how to figure out how to deport every single illegal alien residing in the country. My comment wasn’t meant to be disagreeable at all.

Agree with you about Cantor. The irony here is that I had this same debate with someone else and I was the one defending King’s honor to someone who thought HE was the RINO hack. Go figure.

The U.S. Supreme Court held in Wong Kim Ark v. United States that, "Every citizen or subject of another country, while domiciled here, is within the allegiance and the protection, and consequently subject to the jurisdiction, of the United States."

So an incorrect decision now equals a constitutional amendment. Who knew amending the Constitution was so easy?

Progressives have used this tactic for over a hundred years, we need to figure out who the real enemies are, before we become subjects of a king.

This is 100% f**ked up. King was widely expected to be the Chair, and only La Raza and the fake “conservative” group “Somos Republicans” worked to oppose King’s elevation—and WON! Are you happy that Lamar Smith did La Raza’s bidding? Smith is already wishy-washy on illegal enforcement, now I expect him to do the Chamber’s bidding, and press for a toothless E-Verify bill with no AZ-style sanctions, prison time, or enforcement for illegals who engage in SSN fraud. I I am very depressed. Most FReepers don’t realize what a VERY BAD thing this is.

John C. Eastman, a law professor at Chapman University, has argued that Wong Kim Ark does not entitle U.S.–born children of illegal immigrants to gain automatic citizenship, because being "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States requires a status of "full and complete jurisdiction" that does not apply to aliens who are in the country illegally.
