My ninety year old father-in-law, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, still participates as a color guard. This past Memorial Day he was even helping direct traffic at the American Legion’s parking lot. Incredibly spry for his age.

Sounds like my uncle. He’s 90, sharp as a tack and still gets around well. He gave up downhill skiing about 5 years ago! Used to ski every day in Sun Valley, ID.

He is an excellent engineer. The Army assigned him to Oak Ridge to produce uranium for the bomb. His role was to run a shift in the gaseous diffusion plant. That included teaching the local farmers how to run and maintain the equipment.

They never talk about their experiences, cry in private or wake up scared yes, but talk - almost never.

Nip, my father is like this. He was a scrawny 18 year old fighting the battle of Okinawa. I don't know if he has talked to my brothers (one was 82 Airborne 'Nam and one a retired Sr. Chief of the Navy) but I know he won't talk to me about it. Sad. I want to know his story.

You want age? I am a Vietnam veteran. I was there in 1970. I am now 60 years old. 41 years ago. That is like someone at the end of WWII being there in 1986. At least they had Reagan. I am stuck with the pretender. I still cannot believe that it has been 41 years since I was in Nam. And, there are lots of much older than me Nam vets around. Lots of our senior NCOs and officers were WWII and Korea vets.

Is that anything like insulting the memory of a great man by using his name as a screen name.

You probably don’t know anything about him. And whodat is the very mark of ignorance.

You are the stupid one and you just more than proved it. So stop bring discredit on a fine mans name. Switch your screen name to local joke are something.

Really good info on him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Yeager

He had 11.5 kills in WWII, one the German Jet M262 fighter. Got shot down, excaped back to England and got back in the fight. He is 87 now. Good stuff in that article.

My dad fought at the Bulge too.

Took the whole tour of Europe starting with North Africa, than Italy(Mt.Cassino) France,Belgium(Bulge), and than Germany(Rhine)

I was reading some of his VMails the other day.

He wrote my grandparents telling them that he hoped they would let him come home before shipping out to the Pacific.

1945 AP photo provided by Sgt. Maj. Herman W. Clemens, Ret
U.S. Army Maj. Dick Winters received the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism on D-Day, along with accolades in the book Band of Brothers. Winters died Jan. 2 in Palmyra, Pa.

An intensely private and humble man, Winters had asked that news of his death be withheld until after his funeral, Jackson said. Winters lived in Hershey, Pa., but died in suburban Palmyra.

Rare, signed photograph of Ed Mauser is for sale. Mauser's home-town obituary here: http://www.ketv.com/r/26589275/detail.html

My late uncle drove a tank in Patton's Third Army, and was at the Bulge. The rest of his crew died in the battle, but he didn't have a scratch on him.
When he came back from the war, he would sometimes suffer panic attacks when he heard a car backfire or other loud noises, and hide under the bed. My mom told me all this after he died in 1994. I never knew that he had been in the war, since he apparently never talked about it.
