I just heard a bunch of folks were posting to an insubstantial, unsourced vanity thread.

What did you think was going to happen? Did you honestly believe that the Democrats would sit by and watch the Republicans destroy pillars of their great society?

With the media now and forevermore in the tank with leftists, conservatism is and will always wrongly be portrayed as the enemy of a free and civil world. Truth won't matter. The majority of the electorate are mindless morons and have no inclination to learn anything about our government, and will believe most anything they hear.

Faced with this reality, Republicans must choose to do whatever they can, and live to fight another day.

They must have polling data suggesting that they will be blamed for shutdown. Probably true, I watched the media do it last night.

Funny how Obama (the president) escapes blame.

Not so. We are in this for the long haul, and, as in a poker game, a war, a title bout, or a long race, one does best not to expend one's strength early on.

The Congressional GOP seems to be trading the policy language for deeper spending cuts. And behind that approach is a strategy to make the 2012 budget the main effort, including forcing through the policy measures likely to be delayed for now.

This permits the House GOP to use investigations, hearings, and reports to develop facts and educate the public on the financial and policy issues. In addition, the approach of the 2012 elections and rising interest rates will strengthen the GOP case.

My surmise is that public opinion will shift toward the GOP position in the coming months and that in the budget process Obama and the Democrats will yield ground that they are now contesting. That will permit the GOP to press their advantage.

Update at 11:21 a.m. ET: Senate Majority Harry Reid, speaking on the Senate floor, said an agreement had been reached on spending cuts, but that the issue of women's health, a reference to the dispute over funding Planned Parenthood, was the sticking point.

Not a single news source from either end of the political spectrum backs up your unsubstantiated claim.

Even if it were true, I wouldn't call it a cave.

The GOP still would have gotten $12 B in cuts which is more than the $100 B annualized they've been gunning for...
