Oh yes and if you do the same math with 40 years you still only end up with $260 a month from social security not the average of $800.

I’m beginning to beleive that may just be what has to happen. Look at the comments here you sure can tell who is collecting social security and who is paying for it! I guess until the whole shebang goes belly up and we all are staving no one collecting social security will be willing to help they just want theirs even though theirs was spent starting in 1968 by the politican they elected.

My mother has been on social security for 30 years or so - she may have figured out it’s a welfare program by now. She’s pretty cagey!

Not a man but based on what hubby is projected to collect when he is eligable to retire we will not be collecting that much more than twice we paid in.

Ok guys, let me throw this one out at you.

My late father in law never made more than 13K a year during his entire working career. He lived very frugally and invested every spare dollar he had. We nearly fell over when we found out his estate was worth close to a million dollars when he died.

So he would get means tested and screwed. The guy who made a much higher salary spends every penny he ever made and he gets his full social security check.

Means testing can reward bad behavior and punish responsible behavior.

Privitization is the only answer.

Joanne, you do not understand. The plan is to ration health care so we don’t have 93 year old folks who need their toe nails cut. We won’t have them around.

We want to give billions in welfare, schooling and health care to illegals and welfare slugs but we do not want a bunch of crotchety old seniors eating up the resources that we have because of these geezers.

I find American novels are a great way to find out how people lived before Mr. Roosevelt. Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe will tell you all about it. Life was hard and people didn’t expect that much from it. The father worked hard and the mother had tons of kids. They put up with awful relatives but had large, cheap Victorian houses in which they could lock up the battier ones! And their sons died of pneumonia before antibiotics. And, in between, they managed to have a few laughs, get drunk (alot!)and support the town brothels. It was a strange world but makes for fascinating reading.

Are you sriuos? Have you not been following the discussion over the past 6 months over the budget. Social secuirty and mdicare together account for about 50% of the ferderal budget now and it rises in percetage each year. I’ll try to find the figures for you but in about 10 years they willaccount for about 80% of the federal budget.

“I don’t even want to get into what I think is her Medicare abuse! Due to chronic - and I mean chronic - hypochondria.”

My step-mother was like that. The doctors made a fortune off of her.

That’s how government programs work. They penalize good behavior and reward irresponsible behavior.

Just look at financial aid guidelines used by colleges. If you have scrimped and saved you get less and less financial aid. If you’ve been irresponsible and spent all your savings you get more financial aid. If you’re illegal you get a free ride!!!

So quit your job, change your name to Jose and become a welfare slug.

The person who mentioned “toe nails” obviously didn’t understand that it’s difficult for some elderly people to do it for themselves. Big deal! He didn’t say anything about getting rid of them. He merely pointed out that many of the elderly have been receiving enormous welfare benefits that far exceed their input into it. And some also abuse the Medicare system. Sheesh! I knew he would get flamed for writing it. I can tell you for a fact that some people use Medicare the way illegals use emergency rooms - for everything and anything. I know ‘cause I have to drive some of them to all their appointments!

“Our spending is only a fraction of the commitments made. The total value of our future spending commitments – that cannot be paid for – is $106 trillion.

My mother’s hypochondria is so bad that some doctors refuse to see her anymore. They just can’t waste so much precious time and energy on a generally healthy woman.

Let me say at the beginning, I am not a spring chicken and I am far from it. One of the earliest justifications for SS which I heard was that it would get the beggars off of the streets. And that it did. Now lets move on to point two. SS was not a system that one was supposed to be able to retire on. SS was supposed to SUPPLEMENT your retirement income. Hence for all of my working life, I paid SS and paid into a retirement system. The retirement system cost far more that SS did. I was stunned when I found out that Social Security was paying a high school student quite a bit a month under SSI. So it had morphed from its original intent. The other woodchuck in the woodpile was that Uncle Sam started pushing 401K plans. When Uncle started pushing them, private companies started to change their old pension plans. In the old days, you could spend your days working for a large corporation and retire with a pension on which you could live. Hence the “ well off” retiree appeared. We actually could go south in the winter time. BUT the 401K plans essentially went bust when the stock market went south. The reason for the stock market going soft can be laid at Uncle’s door and the idiot politicians which we have had making decisions for decades. Hence the retirement funds went away to a large extent and some old folks were in the job market again.
THE NEXT POINT. During WWII and subsequently, when labor was scarce, private companies started to offer health care benefits as an inducement to work for them. Now if you, your spouse, or one of your children had a major medical problem this bound you with golden chains to the company up to and including retirement. I recall many discussions with companies that paid much more that I was receiving that I turned down because of my medical coverage. The golden chains again. BUT with the advent of 401Ks the medical plans shifted subtly until the employee paid more and more of the costs. I nailed the best medical plan that I could qualify for and I still pay big bucks per year for its protection. Many poor fish didn’t and now depend on Uncle to cover expenses. (Read now you pay their costs. During this interval the medical providers have become very clever at extracting fees for services provided - not cures accomplished.) So, to finish up, we are where we are at because Uncle performed poorly and many major corporations defaulted on both their pensions plans and their medical plans. And the US citizens are holding the bag lead by opportunistic politicians.
