Yes we are. And it is a terrible mistake to use the dereliction of duty by our entire political class, in both "major" parties, as a pretext for giving government control over whether or not a person can work and therefore survive.
Explain how I am misapplying Ben Franklin's timeless words.
Explain how government control over whether or not a person can work fits into any reasonable definition of liberty.
You said “bureaucrat” ~ did you think state and local government officials were NOT bureaucrats?
Obviously American citizens will not be disallowed from working. On the other hand their employers will be firing the illegal aliens lest they, themselves, be subjected to penalty.
You have done nothing but discuss in generalities, and you have not explained precisely how a system designed to know whether a person is in the US illegally will give "government control over whether or not a person can work" in the US.
If a person is a citizen or legal resident, they can work anywhere in the US they can find a job. Or, are you making no distinction between US citizens and legal residents, and illegal aliens.
Fair point about federal authority.
So how would a patchwork of state by state laws work for employment authorization? Big business wants the cheapest labor and the unions want the most members. Neither group cares about displacing legal workers with illegal workers at low wages. What do we the people do, just watch our country go down the drain?
