Good trade.
When I was at GTMO, they said a Company of Marines were up against a Brigade of Frontier Cubans.......the Marines thought those odds were about right.
You like those odds? 1000 for 1? Sorry, but that’s not a good deal.
1,000 for one? Great deal for the Pallies.
While it’s good and fitting to be happy that this young man will return to his family safely, I can’t help but think Israel is going to pay a heavy price in the future for this.
How so?
How so?
Actually, being on the business end of a sword or gun is the only thing a Muzzie respects.
“Horrible. How many innocents will die as a result of these freed criminals?”
Now they know they can help free more prisoners if they capture more Israelis.
Right. And an exchange rate of 1000 to 1 makes it all the more tempting. Now it might be worth the risk to attack an isolated Israeli outpost.
Speculation is that the swap was to placate the Egyptian army and buy a little good will. They will have an effect on the Arabs, getting them to the table to talk.
Also, the Arabs have been hoping to free their murderers for a long time now. It gives them a little victory and possibly free up more US aid.
That is what it is referring to IMHO. I am not saying any of it is true, but that is what is being said at the moment.
“Nachum, have they offered any proof that Shalit is still alive?”
I believe so. News reports have surfaced. There might be video too. We will see shortly.
“The pact is virtually certain to improve the climate for restarting peace talks that have been stalled for over a year.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday that the deal was ‘finally summarised and both sides signed’....what complete nonsense. I thank G-d that Gilad Shalit will be released, but 1000 for one? These terrorist will be killing Jews inside of two weeks. They have to Improve the climate? Are you completely stupid? (not you Nachum, but the moron that wrote this drivel.)
‘These terrorist will be killing Jews inside of two week’
Some of them maybe. Some are being deported. Some have grown old in Jail.
Munich was much different. I don’t know of a single case where Israel let a prisoner go and then killed them. The Munich savages were all killed as soon as possible none were put in prison and then released.
Is he alive?
The headline is deceptive: Shalit has not been freed; rather, a deal is allegedly in place to free him. Frankly, I’ll believe it when I see it.
I think this will be different. Munich was what, 1970’s? Things change. I bet their pictures will be out and the IDF will be on the watch for them. Accidents will happen.
Thank G-d...Hopefully they will go from prison in Israel to the open air prison known as Gaza.
I hope they implanted chips in these guys so they can hunt them down again.
I’m glad that Shalit will be freed.
Hamas has kept him prisoner, without following the rules of war for prisoners, without allowing Red Cross to visit, etc. None of this results in any punishment in fact it is rewarded in 2 ways. Israel will release 1000 for 1, and also now Hamas has a line of communication and negotiating with the USA - something they did not seem to have 2 years ago.
Seems that Leon Panetta’s message to Israel is that Israel needs to toughen up and start using its military force. Whether this is an overt message or something to be read in context, that message is clear both in these actions and via his statement made in Israel a few days ago. For Israel to sit on its hands and ask others for permission all the time gets it nothing from anyone. It needs leverage and probably needs to take bold action. What is diplomacy if not in part at least leverage? Hamas had leverage through its actions, though “illegal” according to treaties Hamas did not sign.
Negotiating with Hamas directly is a slap in the face to the PA/PLO. This undermines the PA and makes Hamas relevant politically. Now of course, the PA/PLO is going to do its best to save face and claim that this shows the “unity pact” is working blah blah blah. I haven’t fully thought this through but I wonder if this is one of the many ways in which the PA/PLO is to be “punished” for pushing its actions in the UN instead of negotiating with Israel directly. Elevating Hamas is really not in anyone’s interest, unless of course they mollify their stance. But if Israel takes the stance that as far as end game goes there is no difference between Hamas and PA/PLO, Israel can begin to gain leverage.
What I mean by this is, for example, we believe that the PA/PLO will never accept Israel as a Jewish state, and in fact even if they sign a peace deal they won’t mean it it is just part of their “stages plan” to destroy Israel in smaller steps. If Israel takes this position, then the only difference between Hamas and PA/PLO is one of tactics. Israel may as well begin to open a line directly and openly with Hamas and drive a wedge further between Gaza and West Bank, and Hamas and PLO. This forces the PLO to take one of two actions - to become more compromising, or to escalate. If they escalate they only validate Israel’s position that they never really wanted peace. If they become more compromising, Israel can demand concession such as the PLO/PA will have to accept Israel as a Jewish state, agreement between parties will settle all disputes including refugee issue, etc.
With the Quartet pushing Israel to get something done in 15 months, they have to act fast. The US may not hold a PA/PLO bid at the UN forever. Israel needs to get creative and bold here.
I am glad Shalit will be freed. I pinged a few people off the top of my head, I thought you might be interested in my thoughts on the subtext.
I bet many of the prisoners to be released , wish they could stay in prison in Israel
