Jack Abbott was a real violent sociopath but he could write a bit so a bunch of lefty bozos such as Lear and also Norman Mailer (notorious for stabbing his own wife) championed the cause and got Abbott released.

They seemed to imagine they were acting both in service of the arts and of “rehabilitating” prisoners. The usual leftish nonsense....
