Maybe you could bring a utility belt to handle all situations. It could have a gun, a knife, a taser, pepper spray, and those rounded scissors they used to give kids in kindergarten. You can use the latter for the extra timid perps.

Just make sure you have the presence of mind, when someone is pummeling you, to pull out the right weapon.
