WASHINGTON - There was no conciliatory phone call, no heart-to-heart talk to soothe the tensions. No one knows exactly when President Barack Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain went from bitter rivals in the 2008 presidential campaign and foes over health care and national security to bipartisan partners.
Yet in recent months, an alignment on high-profile domestic issues - not to mention an eye on their respective legacies - has transformed Obama and McCain into Washington's most unexpected odd couple. The Arizona senator is a regular visitor to the West Wing and in near-daily contact with senior White House officials.
McCain, in an Associated Press interview, said that he and Obama "trust each other." White House chief of staff Denis McDonough, among the Obama advisers who speak regularly with McCain, praised the lawmaker as a "refreshing" partner who "welcomes a debate and welcomes action."
-snip-
For Obama, the senator has become a rare Republican backer of important elements on the president's second term agenda, including immigration overhaul, stricter background checks for gun buyers, and perhaps a fall budget deal.
In return, McCain has secured increased access to the White House and an opportunity to redeem his reputation as a Capitol Hill "maverick." That image was tainted when McCain tacked to the right during his failed 2008 presidential run against Obama.
"I've told the people of Arizona, I will work with any president if there are ways I can better serve Arizona and the country," McCain said. "That seems to be an old-fashioned notion but it's the case."
-snip-
McCain said his stronger ties with the president on domestic issues won't keep him from challenging the president on national security issues..... "He is the president of the United States," McCain said. "You can strongly disagree and still be respectful."

McCain pretends to be conservative right before his re-election, and the low info Arizona Republicans buy into it every damn time. They’re more naive than Charlie Brown.
Thanks Arizona.
McCain definitely threw the election. Romney didn’t, he REALLY wanted to be president. He was just an awful candidate.
John McCain is a collaborator.
LLS, please leave the Forrestal out of your criticism of McCain. It doesn’t help. He is guilty of a lot of things, but there is no question at all of his culpability in the Forrestal accident. He was just in the wrong place there.
He broke both of his arms and one of his legs during ejection with subsequent lousy care, and that accounts for his range of motion limitations.
I presume you were just using that as something that seemed like a witty riposte?
Juan is so treacherous that I am convinced someone has evidence of him with children, male or female or both, doing degenerate things. He is a nasty, twisted, malevolent man.
Read EXACTLY what I said about the Forrestal.
“I still am not certain about the Forrestal... the official record points to many failures leading up to that accidental firing of a missile.”
I do not see any statement there that implies guilt or infers fault. I personally am not certain about exactly what happened. That should not upset you.
LLS
Lots of POWs hate his guts. Including Ross Perot’s campaign manager. The obama campaign has been blackmailing him over this for a long time. That’s why in his acceptance speech he said “They broke me.”
I hate McCain.
Be very careful there today. EX-POW Col Day died yesterday and John McCain is who splinted his broken arm and nursed him along. I despise John McCain’s senile sell out politics but be careful
Mccain’s autobiography is FAITH OF MY FATHERS. obama’s is DREAMS OF MY FATHERS.
McCain couldn't have cause Forrestal. His plane was spotted {meaning placed on the flighdeck by the Air Dept} at the wrong angle to have cause that. Look up the flightdeck spotting chart for the fire and you'll see why.
Those guys AND the one’s holding his gambling debts.
LLS, I did read your post. You meant it to convey exactly what it did, suspicion of culpability in the Forrestal fire.
You should educate yourself about the Forrestal fire if you aren’t certain, because slyly implying that McCain did have a level of culpability for it does does not do any good to your case our our case that he is a slime-dwelling, bottom-feeding weasel who does not have the best interests of our country at heart.
Saying things that infer (as you clearly did) and outright state (as other posters did) simply makes it easier for McCain supporters and liberals to dismiss our concerns. Which they readily do.
Just saying.
Dittos to that elkfersupper.
I want to see the Kool-Aid break through the wall and slap McCain with a Slim Jim.
Please show me where I said anything about mccain being guilty:
“the official record points to many failures leading up to that ACCIDENTAL firing of a missile.”
I still do not know exactly what happened as the official report lists many things including a grounding tether that was left off that might have caused a static discharge, along with other safety features that were turned off to increase the speed at which planes could take off. My point was that mccain is a walking disaster... whether his fault or not... disaster follows this guy like a black cloud.
Pleasse see my post 98. I never stated he was guilty and I referenced an “ACCIDENTAL” firing of the missile. My point was mccain is a disaster... even in things where he was innocent... almost everything the man has been involved with turns out to be a disaster... unless you think mccain hasn’t been a disaster in almost everything that he has done. Even his child is a walking disaster.
He said “notion”. McCain must really like Obama a whole lot to use “notion”, Barry’s dismissive word.
John McCain likes Barack Obama, who publicly praises Ho Chi Minh. Figure that one out.
The both of them are lost.
