AP doesn't do much with out the Obama administration's approval, so there might be more to this that that. If Obama did OK the release of the story, I'm sure he'll be surprised to find out that he did. If Obama does find out that he authorized the story, I'm sure he'll do the right thing and ask AP to no longer report the story.

I /Nicholas Schmidle/ was reporting on a notorious Ukrainian-born businessman named Semion Mogilevich, who had earned the dubious distinction of making the F.B.I.’s Top Ten Most Wanted List. Mogilevich is, according to one Russian organized crime expert, the “high-end underworld financier of choice.” Before he retired, Levinson had become perhaps the most fearless, crusading agent against Mogilevich. “He’s dangerous because he’ll get anybody who gets in his way,” Levinson once said of Mogilevich, speaking to the BBC.

Possibly, though my guess would be the IRGC in that case. But it’s SOP for the Iranians to notify “friends” (in this case Mogilevich) that they know where their “friend” can find an enemy. So, while the Iranians may not have actually done the killing (I believe Levison is dead) they had a hand in turning him over to someone who wanted him dead.

During the negotiations that in the end freed five U.S. prisoners https://edition.cnn.com/2016/01/16/middleeast/iran-jason-rezaian-prisoners-freed/index.html the case about Levinson was raised several times. The Iranian party promised to investigate the case, but could not provide an answer on the fate of Levinson. It is probably true that the Iranian government has no clue, and if the IRGC or someone else was responsible they would not tell the government.

My guess is that someone informed Mogilevich about the arrest and then Livinson was removed from the list of arrested persons and money was transferred.

However, we should still assume that he is alive.

I am not surprised the Iranian government wouldn’t know.

The IRGC is the power in Iran and controls all the drug trafficking. The IRGC is very, very cozy with Russian smugglers getting goods around the sanctions, shipping across the Caspian Sea.

That’s what Levinson was investigating.
