For thirty (30!) years it went up, and it came down and WTF did we get out of it

Probably every major medical advance in the last 40 years has been because of the space program, but you go right ahead and trash it. We don’t need no steenkin medical advances. You are one of the reasons the future of space exploration belongs to China as we curl up in a fetal position.

Unbelievable. Freepers are suddenly supporting GUBMINT run and TAXPAYER funded space exploration.

“At least the Chinese are spending our money more wisely
than DC is.”

Yah, how dare they spend money they should be loaning to us!
Hell, we could have given them some moon rocks in exchange
for some moolah!

“I heard they ran over our American flag with their rover...the evil-doers.”

Diabolical.

WTF did we get out of it (except 14 dead astronauts)?

So nothing should be attempted until ALL risk is eliminated? Maybe Columbus and the first Pilgrims should have never come to America until it was guaranteed their ships would never sink in a storm? Maybe all airplanes should be permanently grounded.

Exactly, the Moon is so Sixties. Anybody can drop a rover on a rock a quarter million miles away,

Oh, BULLSH*T! If it’s so freaking easy, why isn’t every country on the planet doing it? Why wasn’t every country on the planet doing it in the 1960’s? After all, it’ sooo easy!

By 2020 China will have a man on the moon, a permanent space station and the world’s largest economy measured by purchasing power.

Most Americans are not at all prepared for this.

Also, a large part of this is a bid by China to improve their brand name - so Made in China isn’t a joke.

We basically did most of the heavy lifting for modules on the ISS, which our share will be bought out from Russia here in a few years and we’ll no longer need to hitch rides with them anymore...

Nor will any American man-rated capsulesor vehicle be allowed to dock, without paying a huge amount of $$$$$$ to do so...

Our Manned Spaceflight program is gone...

And no one seemed to notice...

As a bright guy said on CNBC:

China has central planning by engineers, scientists, and mathematicians.
And America has central planning by lawyers.
Neither one is good, but by definition we lose.

Not so bright. The CNBC guy doesn't get it.

Thanks to Deng Xiaoping, China is smart enough to know the limits of central planning, no matter what the discipline of the central planners. The fact is, nobody is smart enough to plan an economy. Those who try lose.

Under Deng, the CCP turned communism from an economic system into a state religion. Lip service to Socialism (now with "Chinese characteristics") served to justify the government, but socialism no longer organized the economy. Deng's reforms unleashed the power of the market economy while allowing the CCP to remain in power. Without his changes, China would still be dirt poor, more like an expanded version of North Korea than a major economic power in the world.

The shuttles were slated for retirement under the Bush administration. Their NASA replacements were years behind schedule and billions over budget. In the mean time you have a dozen or more private companies working on commercial space programs, developing capsules, launch vehicles, orbiting platforms, and the like. You want to beat China to the moon or go to Mars? Then turn private industry loose. Sign contracts with them to accomplish it and they’ll do it faster, cheaper, and more efficiently than NASA and their captive corporations ever could.

Wrong. In fact, the signal of their rover as it landed on the moon was confirmed and tracked by amateur receivers.

Thanks for pointing out amateur astronomers were able to track the Chinese moon probe. You’ll have to forgive me for not trusting anything that comes out of the mouths of communists.

I do understand that Huntsville is in Alabama.

You were saying we should visit Huntsville, presumably to see what all is going in the space industry. I was asking you to elaborate on that, as I am interested in any ray of good news on this front!
