I asked Jim if we could start an AA thread to help those of us who are suffering.

What if you only imbibe when you post at Free Republic?

This might not be an appropriate place for that. Too much visibility and too much politics. AA and politics might not be a good mix since in theory it is apolitical.

I think you can take it to the bank, that everyone here is on your side when it comes to issues like this.

Take comfort in that. You should. Take care...

A fellow FReeper friend always...

I did start FReeping right around the time I quit drinking.

Nobody says it HAS to be about politics every single place here, not even Jim Rob. There are other faith-related threads that seldom or never touch on actual politics.

I would like to be a silent observer. I don’t have any substance abuse issues (other than food, I guess), but I spent most of my life addicted to pornography. Very much so. I am now trying to help a bunch of guys with the same issues. I’ve read about the Samson Society, that is modeled after the 12 step programs but from a purely Christian perspective, and helps men kick porn.

I’ve compared notes with a few friends who are recovered alcoholics, and are concluding the struggles are much the same. I want to learn what helps and what doesn’t.

I quit almost 3 years ago. When I look back, I think it was the hand of God that helped me. Immediately after I attended a retreat, I lost all interest in alcohol. Just like that!

Actually, I did not like myself when I drank. I now prefer to remember everything I said and did! Alcohol caused me too many problems.

Know how to stop drinking? Don’t drink. Nothing can force you to drink. Anything else is just an excuse to drink.

I didn’t say anything about lying so don’t start your doper/alkie idea by making up lies about what I posted.

The whole idea sounds ugly for a political forum, and you have only just begun.

You will win when God controls your life more than the bottle can.

Ultimate victory will be seen when you perceive enough comfort from the Holy Spirit that what binge drinking gave you is not only seen as superfluous, but harmful. In general: honor God in your body. It may take a long time and a lot of miscues to learn how, as “sensitivity” returns. But God is patient.

My mom had the worst, most hopeless-seeming case of alcoholism that I've ever seen. On at least two occasions she was institutionalized, she participated in AA and other organizations on multiple occasions ... all to no avail.

One Christmas Eve she passed out while serving Christmas dinner and I had to pull some strings and drive her 100 miles to be hospitalized. I spent that Christmas Eve sleeping on the couch in the ice cold lounge on a college campus.

That was about 30 years ago ... since that time she has completely eliminated alcohol from her life and has gone on to become a true blessing in the lives of many, many people - a true angel in this world.

There is always hope ... this is something that is completely recoverable. If the well-known programs don't work, don't lose hope. I can promise you that you have every bit as much strength as my humble mother found.

You might ask where she is now .. the answer is I just wished her a good night as she went upstairs. She continues to live a wonderful life with many, many wonderful friends.

Be careful that some other harmful weakness in your life does not humble you while you’re thinking it’s all about “willpower.”

It’s about allegiance. And I’ll say it again... to God. And for some people it’s a long time learning.

May we ignore your ugly post. I know you are a good guy. Perhaps you might ask the mods to remove your comment.

I know this is not you.
