Everybody likes a story with a bad guy, and we like to feel superior. These stories feed both those needs.

I think we live in a time where all the heroes are victims. When I was a kid, the heroes were brave people, firefighters, cops, cowboys in white hats going after the bad guys, etc. Now who are considered heroes? The black, the gay, the feminist, someone who overcame horrible discrimination and prejudice. Therefore, everybody wants to be a victim. People who are not already in a victim group will do something to make themselves a victim, somehow. I know a woman who got a bunch of tattoos and now complains that people "stare" at her. "They're judging me just because I have tattoos! How dare they judge?! I know I didn't get that job because of the tattoos. People are so hateful and bigoted!" She chose to get the tattoos and totally enjoys being a victim, though she pretends to complain.

Also, I think people fall for these stories because it makes them feel superior. "I'm not like those evil people who complained about the little girl in KFC! If I had been there, I'd have hugged her. I'm such a wonderful person!"
