He had the wherewithal to go to the airport, and check himself in. He knew to avoid contact. Those behaviors is what concerns me. He knew what he was doing.
Being prepared with food and water is good, but imho the difficult thing is willingness to stay home if that time comes. When we have first confirmed cases in the US the virus will spread quickly but people will not immediately display symptoms; that means the risk will be everywhere within a small window of weeks, and the only way to be safe is to stay home. How many people will risk their jobs, in this environment, to stay home before the threat is obvious, at the scorn and mockery of their employer no doubt. ("You are panicking, it's just a few isolated cases, if you stay home you're fired.")
There was a brit doctor in Sierra Leone taking on BBC about how he was amazed the severe ebola symptoms appeared so suddenly.
When your sister dies of Ebola, it comes to reason that you will also have it, especially when her blood is all over your shirt.
I would also think that the severity of symptoms relates to the initial virus exposure. If you have blood all over your shirt, then you will get a higher dose of the virus initially, than if you got a microscopic dose. Death can come fast due to a higher virus load, especially when you are in a rush to get to a medical facility in the US.By not getting immediate treatment- like IVs or blood donation from a person who survived Ebola- you will succumb faster.
One other theory bandied about in the comments regarding this story is that some Nigerians think he was murdered.
“her blood is all over your shirt”
“due to a higher virus load”
Good points. It’s hard to believe Sawyer, an intelligent person on paper, could be so irresponsible. Before the severe symptoms kick in, a kind of zombification happens?
It would be interesting to see the videos of him at the airports.
That thought crossed my mind as well. For a variety of reasons it was my experience that security guards were usually armed. If he had lab confirmed ebola and went crazy at the hospital it wouldn’t surprise me if the administration offed him. Imagine someone like him escaping the hospital and running through the crowded streets of lagos.
“some Nigerians think he was murdered”
Supports the crazed zombie descriptions. The pain must be excruciating - a disease from hell for sure.
There was another story from Liberia (I believe - can’t find the story now) where the ebola patients escaped and were terrorizing the children’s ward and surrounding homes. All of the workers fled the hospital.
They could have been mad also, when they discovered he lied to them about not being exposed to Ebola.
Possibly.
But peeing on the nurses would have been ‘the end’ for him. I got a mental picture of him yanking out iv lines running down the hall and peeing on anyone who tried to stop him. Hubby and I suspect this may be why he was cremated so quickly. Hide the giant gaping hole in his skull.
Their BS quotient is very very low over there. This was a private health facility so many of the nurses likely had been trained in Western hospitals in Europe or the states. The doctor as well.
I just dont think that Ebola makes you violent. It takes a lot of energy to be violent, and these patients are really sick. You do not hear about violent Ebola patients in the clinics in which these infected Americans worked. Maybe he did get offed, because he was angry , wanting to leave, and in the early stages of his illness. The violence was part of his personality.
i think Sawyer was a piece of work, starting with his behavior to the healthcare staff who treated his sister ( most likely ignoring infection protocols) to his very end.
you assume that mr sawyer was in a reasonable state of mind which strikes me as somewhat of a leap. clearly the behavior demonstrates that he was not.
