In poor black neighborhoods, they ride little girl’s bikes because they can’t afford cars - to watch grown men struggle on these little bikes has been an amazing sight to me. I’m not making this up! No $4,000 bikes for them!

Obviously, what I’ve not understood in all these years is that these murderous cyclists are pc - therefore held to a different standard than the ordinary manslaughter charge.

Just curious, what's with the scarf?

There was a recnt thread about a movie star having sex in a car and the photo of her boyfriend also showed him wearing such a scarf?

Is this some sort of fad now promoting the islamic Pali's?

Last I heard, he’d not made a statement, or apology, but had retained an attorney.

Wise move.

You don’t have to be a low life to be a crazed rider - just a narcissistic NYer with a superiority complex. I hope he rots in prison despite his handsomely-tied scarf. That woman won’t be able to celebrate her kid’s birthday thanks to that killer.

No, that particularly tied scarf is considered sexy. I’ve tied my scarf in that way, too - only in winter, unlike this idiot.

“Vehicular homicide is appropriate... why worry about four wheels versus two? It’s a type of negligent manslaughter, regardless of the number of wheels on the vehicle, or whether it’s gas powered, electrically powered, human-powered, or gravity-powered.”

I agree with this statement. As a long time bicycle commuter I can say I hate these type riders. They are as bad as the people zooming by at 80+mph on a freeway

I have for years said that bicyclist should be required to have a license - just like a car driver to use roads and should have their bikes inspected just like a car once a year for safety.

My guess is that this rider was a bike messenger who was riding a fixed gear, single speed track bike. Those have no brakes and you can’t coast, you slow down by applying reverse pressure to the pedals and are used used extensively by the messengers in NYC because they are very low maintenance but are dangerous as all get-out. IF that was type bike being ridden then the charge should be severe because the rider was being dangerous in a premeditated fashion.

I've seen some of this, but where I live not a lot and they are no where near as irresponsible and arrogant as the transplanted suburbanites who think they are "the masters of the universe".

Obviously, what I’ve not understood in all these years is that these murderous cyclists are pc - therefore held to a different standard than the ordinary manslaughter charge.

You are right they are deferred to in the courts. If you open a car door and they run into it your looking at a 5 to 6 figure court case.

No, he wasn’t a messenger as I originally thought! The messengers are the scourge of NYC. This guy was a recreational rider who tried for higher and higher speeds- through family-friendly Central Park.

This pc bicyclist stuff is a revelation to me - but I'm usually 30 years behind the zeitgeist.

I do feel sorry for poor blacks on little tricycles struggling to the local A&P, lol!

Most cyclists I see on public roads, violate every traffic rule, including stop signs.

I used to until I realized that most of these are gang bangers "killing time" between working their corner.

I grew up in Chicago and have lived here all my life. We never had an issue with bicycles until about 20 years ago when it started to become "trendy" to live in the city before moving back to the suburbs. Why they want to bring the suburbs into the city beats me, but they do.

I agree bike riders often ride recklessly. For instance yesterday they were riding side by side on a two lane road, peddling at 8 miles per hour with a line of cars behind them.

I think it is worse than having no brakes, he had them and just didn’t use them.

I don’t get suburban attitudes in big cities, either. Leave the bikes at home, people!

Surprised that there still are the messengers, considering that internet has gotten really better.

yes, there are degrees of damage to the phrase “broken shoulder.” anywhere from dislocation, to a collarbone break, to a bad bone break, to it being crushed, to it almost getting ripped off.
