I actually remember a piece in national review that talked about when Martinez first ran for office. Some derided her as “Texan” which, according to the piece, was really code for Meztiso.

As a recent transplant to New Mexico, I was impressed that Susanna was out front with her conservative message. Even with the election looming, she came out with an ad that said that we must stop the push at the state legislature to give drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. In a state with a large Hispanic population, no less. Not many politicians anywhere who would do that.
