They are fighting a losing battle.
The underground economy will continue in these horrible economic times.

They are going to push more people to operate underground with cash under the table, barter, etc.

They go after these extremely small time entrepreneurs while big time businesses do what they want with little scrutiny. People are not blind to this hypocrisy.

Who insures the car? Uber and Lyft may offer supplemental insurance to cover passengers, but in many states your primary carrier may reject a claim for damage on your own vehicle if you are using it for commercial purposes.

None of this matters to me, of course. The real issue is ultimately going to be determined when an Uber or Lyft driver has to deal with his or her own insurance company in the event of an accident.

I don't think governments are outlawing these "ridesharing" services because of the risk involved. I also don't think governments are outlawing them because of lost tax revenue. I believe governments are outlawing and regulating them under pressure from the hotel (AirBNB) and taxi (Lyft and Uber) industries that are compelled (by law) to take on enormous costs that these outfits don't have to carry.

Small time entrepreneurs? LOL. Uber is now a $40 billion (yes, that's billion) company. They haven't been a small time entrepreneur in a long time.

I do know that if my neighbor started renting out rooms to transients, I’d head straight to the zoning board.

How would you know that they aren't family or friends? Do you go to your neighbors and force them to verify who is in their house if you see a strange car in the driveway?
