The choice of his successor will depend on who is in the Assembly of Experts and the Guardian Council at the time, who can, in turn, influence the ‘selection’ of the successor. Most probably, Khamenei has already nominated someone in his will too.
Most likely candidates mentioned are: Sadeq Amoli Larijani, Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, Hashemi Rafsanjani and don’t forget Ayatollah Mohammad Taghi Mesbah Yazdi (Ahmadinejad’s ‘spiritual’ mentor).
Of the above, only Shahroudi is a Grand ayatollah and a Seyyed (a said descendant of Mohamad, similar to Khomeini & Khamenei). These should carry some weight in his possible selection for the top job.
Other factors come into play as well, especially the influence of IRGC. Although the IRGC, all around, is quite influential, its primary mandate is to protect the Velayate Faghih, ie the foundation of the Islamic Republic (not a specific candidate), particularly during ‘uncertain’ or ‘transition’ periods.
Not to mention that MeK tried to assassinate him in the early 1980s. Only his right arm was seriously injured. Ever since, he apparently shakes hands with his left hand. Kinda appropriate too; he was partly educated in the USSR, and is/was known to be a ‘leftist’ Islamist, as opposed to, say, Ahmadi-Nejad who is known to be a right-wing Islamist.
