Venona definitely established that Julius was a spy.

No. The nature of the secrets passed and forensic intelligence, combined with David Greenglass's corroboration on key points established that Julius Rosenberg was a spy.

What Venona establihsed definitively was that Julius Rosenberg was not only a spy, but that he recruited and ran an entire ring of spies.

But it appears that Ethel’s involvement was slight.

There is actually no way to know if this statement is true, and it is probably false.

The belief that Ethel did not know her husband was recruiting for the NKVD given her own background and the nature of their relationship is, frankly, not credible. Similarly, the possibility that he would have been able to carry out his own espionage activities and the coordination of those he recruited without at least her knowledge and probably her involvement is equally unlikely.

For proof beyond a reasonable doubt, all we have is the testimony of David Greenglass. He lied multiple times, so we will never really know. Near the end of his life, when he had no particular reason to lie, Greenglass said of his nephews: "Their whole life has been involved with this kind of stupidity, to actually think they (the Rosenbergs) were innocent."

The claim that a committed Communist like Ethel Rosenberg was not involved in her husband's treason is very dubious, NPR's attempt at revisionism notwithstanding.

Greenglass worked at Oak Ridge which was doing U235 Enrichment.
Klaus Fuchs, working at Los Alamos gave the Soviets the secret to Plutonium implosion method.
These two guys gave the USSR access to $2B in research (in 1945 dollars)
They passed this info to USSR using Rosenberg.

All of them should have gotten hung.

At the trial, he said Ethel Rosenberg typed his notes that were then given to the Russians. But decades later, Greenglass, who died in 2014, told New York Times reporter Sam Roberts he had lied to protect his wife, Ruth Greenglass, and suggested it was she who had typed up the notes. Ruth Greenglass died in 2008.

IOW, he was under orders from his Soviet handler to do it that way.

Through the Venona intercepts the White House knew what few others knew beyond a shadow of a doubt—that the Rosenbergs were guilty. Eisenhower offered to commute the Rosenbergs death sentence if they confessed and cooperated. True to the tenets of Soviet espionage they turned Ike down and insisted they were innocent.

Alger Hiss never confessed to spying either. By maintaining innocence—even in the face of convincing evidence—Cold War era American citizens convicted of espionage or related crimes created doubt and sometimes became causes célèbres to the useful idiots of mass media, academia and the Left.

That is why the cases of the Rosenbergs, Hiss, and many on the Venona list remain controversial today.

I’ve been asked to explain what the communist “sandwich” tactic is, so here goes.

Communist strategists and agents would watch certain people who they knew could become “movers and shakers”, and try to get their operatives into the “camp” of these people at the start of their careers.

Often they would approach an up & comer such as Dr. King or Albert Einsten, offer/volunteer to help them, and hopefully become a member of the staff (Levison was King’s financial advisor, legal advisor, and possible speechwriter while O’Dell was his personal secretary).

By becoming “trusted” aides and advisors, the reds have created a “sandwich” effect in that the target is “sandwiched in” between the two key red aides/advisors.

Once they had the target in their vise, it was all over for the individual to ever break out of their grip and influence.

I suspect that there were several “vices”/”sandwiches” around Obama during his life time, from “mentors” and their friends (Frank Marshall Davis and Obama’s grandfather) to David Axelrod who was picked out and sandwiched by Soviet asset/CPUSA member David Simon Canter (whose father worked for Stalin while his family lived in Russia during the 1930s - father was reportedly a founding member of the CPUSA) and Canter’s red buddy, Don Rose.

Rose has never been openly identified as a member of the CPUSA, but by his own admission, plus some documents in congressional hearings, has a long history of supporting “progressives” since at least the late 1940’s.

Both picked Axelrod to help them with their local red rag and then helped get him a job at the Chicago Tribune. Then Axelrod was connected to Obama while he was covering Chicago politics. How this happened, either by design, or just following/reporting on local politics, I don’t know, but I have my suspicions.

Another neighborhood “sandwich” of leftists occurred when Obama “bought” his current house (owned by Tony Rezko, fronted by one of Rezko’s friends). Obie’s neighbors included leftist Rabbi Jacob Weinstein (I’ve got to check on the full name), possibly Rezko, Bill Ayers and his psychopathic Marxist wife Bernadine Dohrn (he knew Ayers through a leftist foundation they both worked for), Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his far-left Trinity United Methodist Church, and according to David Canter’s son March, his father “knew” Obama.

Since David Canter, the communist (id. CPUSA member and open distributor of Soviet propaganda, and anti-Goldwater “disinformation” propagandist for the 1964 election), was a political kingmaker in Chicago (i.e. leftist Mayor Harold Washington), it makes sense that he “knew” Obama but when and how, I’m not sure, and we will probably never know unless there was FBI surveillance on Canter.

Obama’s other Chicago CPUSA friends included Milton Cohen and Dr. Quentin Young, his personal physician, who was the Party’s leading advocate of the “universal healthcare” plan.
Young had ties not only to the CPUSA (id. in congressional testimony), but also SDS, the Marxist-led Medical Committee for Human Rights and its youth arm, the Student Health Organization, anti-House Committee on Un-American Activities CPUSA fronts (NCAHUAC/HISC), and later the Marxist Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

DSA was created by a merger of remnants of SDS, the New American Movement (another Marxist offshoot of SDS), and the Marxist wing of the Socialist Party turned Democratic Socialists (Organizing Committee).

Obama’s “New Party” was listed as a part of or affiliate of the DSA.

Almost every “New Party” in the US since 1969 was some kind of Marxist entity, from the original one in 1969 created by a coalition of reds affiliated with the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), another Soviet/CPUSA funded/influenced and often led “think tank” that included many members of Congress either as supporters, or often unknowing participants in their projects. (See S. Steven Powell’s book “Covert Cadres”, about the history of IPS and its Marxist orientation.

As an aside, several Communist Party USA member/affiliated US Congressmen and women created their own “staff sandwiches” in which they hired other known reds as their advisors and liaisons. This included George Crockett Jr (Dave Moore), John Conyers (John? Weiner, National Lawyers Guild), Ron Dellums (now Rep. Barbara Lee and then aide Carliotta Scott who was banging Grenada Marxist dictator Maurice Bishop until another more Marxist/pro-Soviet/Cuban faction executed him).

Another “sandwich” was Angela Davis, who came from a Communist Party family, had a CPUSA member boyfriend, was sent to a CPUSA-dominated school in New York, then to the Marxist Free University of Berlin (Herbert Marcuse), and then hired at UCLA with the help of avowed Marxist Prof. Donald Kalish”.

All this talking about “sandwiches” and their larger format of “subs” is making me hungry. But in retrospect, if all the communist “sandwiches” in the US were put together, they would have more “subs” than the US Navy. That is frightening.

And I haven’t even mentioned the Soviet spy rings in the US Government from the 1930’s-40’s, where they often “sandwiched” in the few non-communists in an agency so that they couldn’t stop the pro-Soviet line from being promoted (Office of War Information, (Sen). Alan Cranston (D-CAL)), MKVD agent Rep. Emanuel Dickstein, Rep. Vito Marcantonio (never publicly id. as a CPUSA member; probably not a card carrying one for tactical reasons); Bella Abzug - a long suspected KGB asset, etc.

If you checked the Congressional Staff Directory for each term that the Marxist congressmen/women were in office, you’d find a lot of red staffers and pinko sympathizers. John Kerry had a couple of people he hired for his various committees investigations who were known communist sympathizers (Sandinistas); Hanoi propagandist (who also worked for Rep. Clarence Long (D-MD) who fired him, and Rep. John Anderson (gotta check on this relationship).

Welcome to the wonderful world of communist subversion. It makes “Alice in Wonderland” seem like child’s play.

The Hiss and Rosenberg cases only remain “controversial” to those communist sympathizers and fools who raise a stink out the truth.

Most true liberals conceited that they were guilty after Alan Weinstein’s book “Perjury”, supplemented by Ron Radosh’s book on Hiss, while the Venona papers put a lot of wooden stakes in the red coverups for the Rosenberg spy ring.

I’m willing to bet the house that there are more documents out there that will blow your socks off about communists in the US government, not just spies but also agents of influence, disinformation journalists (look at The Nation), etc.

Just a hunch, based on over 45 years of experience and research in this area.

Thanks for this forgotten article on Helen Sobell (the second one). Here is why it is so important, far more important than 99% of the Soviet spy operations researcher ever knew (and I knew many of them).

The 2nd Helen married Casey Gurewitz in 1938 (I knew him) and they appeared on a list of a major CPUSA front in 1940 in DC. The fact that she worked at the National Bureau of Standards in crucial to uncovering another possible Soviet spy ring in the NBS.

Also working for the NBS was Abraham Bloom and his buddy Alfred Hensley, both secret members of the MD/DC CP. Bloom only admitted this in 1999, i.e that he was a Party member Eventhough he lied his way through govt employment by denying that he was. One story said that Bloom was “covered” by Harold Urey, of the atomic bomb project, while he was at the NSB.

I’ve found evidence in the National Archives that Bloom and Hensley visited Emerson Laboratories in NJ during WW2 as part of their employment by the Govt. Emerson Labs was deeply involved in the development of the “proximity fuse” (prox fuses were used on many types of ordnance, from AA rounds to artillery rounds, as well as for the trigger of the atomic bomb).

Bloom told me that he joined the anti-war movement after the war because of his work on “the proximity fuse”.

Good old Abe was a local DC/Md leader of the Marxist-infiltrated SANE, DC Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam, National Mobe, New Mobe and its Trotskyite split off successor faction, the National Peace Action Coalition.

NPAC was also a successor to the Trotskyite Socialist Workers Party (SWP) youth arm, the Young Socialist Alliance (YSA), led by one Don Gurewitz, the son of CASEY GUREWITZ and his second wife, HELEN GUREWITZ, WHO WAS MORTON SOBELL’S FIRST WIFE, according to some historians.

I knew Casey, Helen the Red Bitch, and Don. Absolutely lifelong communists who hated America.

So Morton Sobell and Casey Gurewitz did the old switcheroo of wives, both named Helen. This was common among some reds, esp. in the SWP. You’d get dizzy just trying to draw a marriage tree between the Chis, Chase and Linger girls and guys. They switched wives like you switch tv channels.
Needed a Dramamine just to follow them, and wedding gifts got to be a major expense.

And I’m willing to bet that what I have written above is only the tip of the iceberg of one aspect of Soviet/Communist espionage/subversion and disinformation in the US.
