Kind of unrelated but, I used to eat lunch with Ralph Merkel, the holder of the patent for the Knapsack Algorithm for key exchange. The patent had just expired when it finally became useful. He made several hundred dollars from it. He and Eric Drexler were thick as thieves at the time and were mostly interested in nanotechnology issues (Foresight Institute). Good times.
