My daughter, born in Minnesota as the progeny of a Scots-Irish father and a 1/2 Hispanic mother moved to Hawaii (Maui) right after college in 2011.

She, of “olive complexion”, sturdy framework and long black hair, had very little problem in obtaining the local discount card, reserved for “native Hawai’ians”.
She still ^looks^ Polynesian today.

The prefix “poly” in Polynesian does not seem to indicate a single race or ethnic group, but rather one made up of several, like most people everywhere else-that doesn’t sound like a “tribe” to me...

Thanks-what little I’ve read of their origins and other Polynesians don’t indicate a pure ethnic group, either-it talks about people from Australia, Aryans from what is now India, and parts of Asia-all getting into boats and island hopping for centuries-very interesting people, but not ethnically pure, like Obama is wishing-some anthropologists say DNA tests show only 50% of Hawaiians who call themselves natives really are.

Some of the Maori indigenous to French Polynesia developed excellent navigation skills, using the constellations as a primitive GPS system, & paddled their canoes all the way to Hawaii. That's another racial component to native Hawaiians.

The privately owned island of Niihau in the Hawaiian chain is home to these natives, & is closed to outsiders.

Most native-born Hawaiians who don't claim racial "purity" are proud of their unusual mixed genetic histories.

Tribe and race are different things; you can be inducted into a tribe or be born into a tribe of people who look very little like you do.
Not so much with race, which all too often has been defined by the proposed "one drop of blood".
