Yep, that is exactly how it is. Their caste system is still used to determine social status and the types of jobs you can do. So most of the people in the government, media, university professors, doctors, lawyers, are Brahmin. They do have popular elections so everyone gets a vote, but the Brahmins are the ones running the political parties, no matter who gets elected.
Umm, not really! Lower caste leaders DO play a big role in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the most popular Prime Minister India has had in a few decades, is from a lower caste.
Caste sensitivities play a big role in how political parties position their policies and in nearly all government jobs and government institutions, people from the lower castes have affirmative action programs, which not only provide them opportunities but also lower the performance expectations.
Heck, in many states, Brahmins are now fighting for reservations given many are in/near poverty. The caste system is not a simple Brahmin versus lower caste affair; its far, far more complex than that. Many lower castes and sub-castes are at each other’s throats and the same goes for higher castes, which is one reason why the caste system still exists.
