New York is full of people who lost their families. They don’t tell you right away. Maybe when they know you better and have come to believe you will understand and will share their horror. It never fails to amaze me that this ugly part of history is still with us in the sorrow and courage of so many people around me.
“My mother was handed to someone over a fence when she was a baby.” “My father was the only one who survived.” “My parents and I got out but all the rest of our family were killed.” All verbatim. They are past showing emotion over it. A certain stoicism survives and a knowledge of recent racism that is deeper than any others can ever know.
Mr. Kushner joins those whom I thank for sharing this painful past so that we can be wiser. Beautiful piece. Every word is perfect and a blessing to us who dwell in a world where the word “racism” is bandied about with careless ignorance.
