Erdogan will remove Ataturk from Turkish history, just like Stalin removed others from Russian history.

Q: If a country is turned into a sharia state what is required to make it a secular state?
A: A new Ataturk.

It will probably a horrifically bloody civil war to produce a new Ataturk.

Yes but I am not a Turk.
I have been to Turkey a couple of times. Enjoyed myself, liked the people I met. However like every western-oriented modern-life seeking Moslem nation I have ever been in there is a philosophical fault line running through the culture,
How do they balance the demands and outlook of Islam with the modern world. They are diametrically opposed to each other! One has to mentally reinterpret it as a “exotic” form of Unitarianism, monotheistic view everything else is “ancient history”. Some do these seamlessly, others have problems balancing the two. For example I was at a wedding between a Moslem and a westerner in Morocco there was simultaneously booze and no booze at the wedding. There was a curtain around the booze, it was like Schrodinger's Cat!

There are no checks and balances in Sharia and very few if any left in our Republic.

Yes, Islam is incompatible with modernity, the simple solution in Muslim countries is to be a hypocrite.
In KSA alcohol is very tricky, but many are drinking siddique and the expats have a website with recipe for home brew http://www.expats.org.uk/features/alcohol/theblueflame.html
In Iran it is easier to find alcohol than in KSA.

IIUC, he was not even in the country at the time the attempt was staged. Get a clue.
When the coup happened, Erdogan was vacationing in Marmaris, which is on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.
The story is, Erdogan high-tailed it to Dalman, where his Gulfstream IV was waiting, hopped aboard, and flew to Istanbul to go on TV and reassure his supporters.
Erdogan's flight path.
There are reports the coup plotters tried to capture him in Marmaris, but were too late, and intercepted his airplane with F-16s but wimped out on pulling the trigger.
In any event, after some circling, he landed at Ataturk, greeted his supporters, and went on TV to denounce the plot and take command.
That's the story. But you have to wonder ... why didn't they take him out in Marmaris? Why weren't they waiting at Dalman? Why didn't they blow his Gulfstream out of the night sky?
Were they incompetent? Or were they in on it?

Get a clue. The only clue I had was from a report I heard, apparently an incorrect one.

Were they incompetent? Or were they in on it?Do you mean that the whole thing could have been a false flag to bring his opposition out into the open, so he can remove them permanently?
