It is looking less likely that Turkey will even get into the EU. The EU is not doing so well and it will come apart if more countries leave.

I read about it in an article here at FR posted yesterday, but the article was scant on specifics. I don’t know when he was killed, how, or otherwise, just that he was killed according to the article. Then I read other articles indicating support for Erdogan was superior to that of the support for the army. Several different articles, therefore it seemed true to me.

Ermagern is demanding the US extradite Gulen to Turkey.

Normally the response would be “go and get stuffed,” but I won’t be surprised when it happens.

Peters absolutely nails it (as he usually does). What appalling is the near-universal praise in this country (even among the so-called conservative media) for the triumph of “the rule of law” in Turkey. The attempted coup could have easily been a set-up by Erdogan and his allies, to flush out regime opponents and eliminate them once and for all.

It is interesting that the coup was apparently instigated and led by mid-level officers (with a few exceptions). That reflects the purge of the Turkish General Staff (TGS) that has been going on since Erdogan took power over a decade ago. The officers who tried to overthrow him were among the last who emerged from the service academies before Erdogan began building an Islamist state; they understand the dangers of an Islam-based, fundamentalist government and realize the threat it poses to Ataturk’s vision.

Iran faced a similar problem when the radicals took power. The officer corps was largely populated with western-trained leaders who were viewed as enemies of the state. But when Saddam invaded Iran, they were forced to retain many of those officers, to stave off defeat on the battlefield. Their presence was a major reason the regime created a parallel military with the IRGC and began to give it more resources over the “regular” military.

Turkey won’t go that route. The coup will give Erdogan the excuse he needs to thoroughly purge the remaining moderates from the military and replace them with regime loyalists. To coin a phrase, Turkey and NATO will pay a heavy price for the Islamist’s triumph.

Pakistan has 130 highly powerful nuclear bombs that are fully lauchable and ready. War between Pakistan and India is closer now.

This is more worrisome to me then Iran/Israel for the near term.

I wasn’t questioning the truth of it, just trying to understand the context. I heard that Erdogan purged a couple of hundred generals and admirals in recent years.

“Is it possible Erdogan was behind this ‘failed’ coup...conning disloyal elements in the government to reveal themselves, crush them and take total control with no effective opposition?”

How about another possibilty:

Putin was behind the coup so he could smoke out the radical Islamists and target them for destruction.

Yes, I heard/read that too. Sorry I don’t have a link for you to that article about the General being killed. It was one of the many on the topic yesterday.

So a great country is destroyed by Islamist hardliners before our eyes—and our president praises its “democracy.”

Obozo does what he does because he is a MUSLIM RADICAL running interference for his RADICAL MUSLIM brothers.

ALL of Obozo's acts that seem to defy logic are deliberate and intentional acts.
