Cruz is who he is, already. Endorsement or not, TRUMP ripped his mask off, on character and exposed him as a nasty piece of work.

Some of us already recognized him as one more climber.

His mouth and his wallet were both open 100% of the time, but playing to two polar opposite crowds.

UniParty.

Exactly right. Trump is a closer, so he`ll take Cruz`s endorsement if it`s offered, but he owes Cruz nothing for it, and he will never, nor should he ever trust Cruz.

I can just picture Cruz asking Trump `What do I get from you if I endorse you`? Trump`s response:. `Nothing except a lifeline from your fall to irrelevancy`.

Trump holds all the cards.

I appreciate what you’re saying. The election could be tight and Trump/Pence are rightfully working for every conservative vote they can get. They’re probably still trying to get some recognition from Kasich and others as well.

But with respect to Cruz, the man severely damaged his political appeal by a selfish, self righteous, and self inflicted wound. As they say, how you handle defeat says a lot about you. He was resentful and quite frankly, stupid, for not turning the moment around for himself. The opportunity of a lifetime was right there for him.

Cruz also has problems in DC working with colleagues. Its good to take a stand but he has a messianic and preachy personality that doesn’t go over well with fellow senators, even when he’s right and taking a principled stand.

Cruz has been all but invisible since the convention. I question the relevancy of someone who has stepped in so much caca. His image has taken a beating. Its not too late for him to come to his senses, but it would take a personal transformation that is unlikely to occur in my humble opinion.

He would probably be a better and more effective Supreme Court justice than a senator. A good reason for him to adopt a conciliatory tone with Trump.

Thanks for your post. I find it very difficult to disagree with anything you have to say. He was my guy but he is damaged goods now for sure.

Nevertheless my basic point vis a vis an endorsement of Trump still stands: He can add more votes for Trump that he would take away. He would make a little peace between the hard conservatives that supported him and who are still reluctant to really get behind Trump. There are more than a few of them out there still sulking and we may need those votes.

Bottom Line: I think the Trump outreach to Cruz was a wise move but I’m not confident it will turn him around. I hope so but I doubt it.

Cruz has already self destructed. He’s irrelevant.

I don't like him either, but unfortunately Cruz still has a cult following, albeit a shrinking one, of people who see him as some kind of messianic holy man. If these people stay home in November, it could give Hillary the edge in a number of swing states, so having Ted tell his cult to vote Trump in November would be helpful. Pence has an uphill battle to do so, obviously, but it's necessary Realpolitik and the more establishment-friendly Pence is the right man to attempt it.

I can understand why Cruz harbors bad feelings toward Trump. It was a bruising primary battle for sure. But he needs to think about the long game and (as you aptly put it) come to his senses.

Cruz doesn’t have to profess love for Trump; that would be phony. What he should do IMO is try to look more like a team player. All he has to do is look and act helpful to the party’s efforts to win. It would win him back some of his lost respect and help him take the steps toward making himself relevant again.

I agree. Cruz needs to make a move and soon.

If he lets this Trump request for support just lay there it cannot turn out well for him. If Trump loses he justifiably catches some of the blame. If Trump wins there is no reward and he will just be lumped in with the rest of the discredited Trump-Cannot-Win-Never-Trumpers.
