“This line “broke” a week ago and the word is just getting out?”
Have known about it since the day after it was discovered, they aren’t real sure how long it has been leaking, or how much gasoline leaked out. Over 500,000 gallons is a guess, and may be more.
The MSM would have known about it had they bothered to look, the company posts situation daily of condition of the pipeline, even in quiet times.
The oil companies can keep up with demand, until everyone panics and rushes out to fill their tanks. The JIT model is everyone buys gas once a week, there is enough supply for that. Now there will be shortages.
BTW, there is a crew of 500 on site working in remote Alabama on this right now.

I just got a call from a friend. She waited in line to get gas. She said when she started waiting there was one station out of 6 in her suburb that was out. When she headed home 4 were out.
In the meantime....
Gov Haslam issues state of emergency extending fuel trucking hours to TN after pipeline burst.
Went out tonight and the local grocery with 24 pumps was out of gas. Found it elsewhere but there is a definite run happening with lots of folks filling up gas cans.
Spoke with DIL in another town and 1/2 the pumps were shut down at the station there.
Not easy to stop a thousand mile length of nearly incompressible fluid.
Guessing that the pumping stations are 50 miles apart, depending on elevations... 50 gal/ft...
How far apart would you like your isolation valves?
They would require a massive accumulator.
How quickly would you like the valves to shut?
All that added surface area, subject to the same elements as the line, or worse; may not be any better off.
And the added complexity...
No problems out in the country yet. Just filled up, no closed pumps, price still $2.09. I hear it’s a very different story in town. They’ll probably make their way out here tomorrow.
No problems deep in northern mtns of NC but I filled up just in case.
It’s changed here since last night. The local places have half their pumps closed today, lines, people with gas cans. Worse in town, some stations completely out and closed. Media is being very low key about this, usually they’d be all over it. I’m filled up, good for a week at least. I assume the problem will be fixed by then.
thx for info
NTSB. I am not kidding. http://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/AccidentReports/Pages/pipeline.aspx
