To me, Jesus statement (Matt 22, Mark 12, Luke 20) was plainly a condemnation of idolatry. Caesar's image was on the idolatrous coin of the realm, the lucrative tribute money, which no lawful Jew should touch much less traffic and possess. Conversely, God's image is on man. Jesus was also condemning, his brothers, God's people, for not rendering themselves: their lives, fortunes and sacred honors to God the Father Almighty who could deliver them from statist Rome, and much more importantly and gloriously: sin and death.

If we were to mark Jesus words today, we'd send Washington DC back all of its fiat dollars and engage in the commerce of love for each other, laying up treasures in heaven where neither moth, nor rust, nor theives can steal them away.
