Thanks for some actual information and not just a BS citation from the ComPost Dispatch.

I-44 had multiple wrecks and slide offs, too. I think roads just got glazed with black ice or freezing rain.

Up here in Minnesota, the salt trucks tell us that the salt will not work when temps are below a certain point (15 degrees?). Maybe they salted, but your temps are too low?

Also, something called “black ice” can form when there is a light dusting of snow on a highway. Tires going over the snow at high speed will melt the snow, which promptly freezes into a thin sheet of invisible ice. And then more light snow comes down on it, covering it up in case anyone has eyes sharp enough to notice it without the glaze of snow over it.

As I keyboard this, the snow plow is out plowing the parking lot and driveway. The stuff he is piling up won’t melt until the end of May!

Cheer up, things could be worse. We are supposed to be -35 this weekend.

Thanks - like I said - temperature is high 20s and precip was very light. Very little salt or other deicer is needed to cut this.

They weren’t prepared? Hours after the onset there were no trucks. When it snows, and salting does little good, we see them out in force at the beginning of the event.

Due to Global Warming there is no need to deice the roads anymore.

A couple of years ago my son and I drove from Central NY State to Indianapolis. He was planning to move there and wanted to check the area out. Our trip happened to coincide with a very heavy snowfall, and frigid temps. The roads were horrible, traffic backed up for miles, vehicles had spun off the road. When we finally got to our hotel and asked why the roads were so bad, we were told that the snow clearing budget had been exhausted, and the city couldn't afford to buy more salt or sand. Don't know if that has anything to do with your problem.

In an article I found online, it said that as of the 3rd week in January 2014, Indianapolis had used up most of its snow clearing budget due to overtime and heavy salt/sand usage. The budget was supposed to last through all of 2014.

The husband of a lady I work with was at Jefferson City city hall just before it hit on business. When he was leaving they just then decided that they should get the trucks out there. Usually if a storm is coming they have them out there the night before. They did not expect this one. This was the hardest kind of storm to predict. It was just barely a storm. Very little precipitation, but the temperature right at freezing. Nobody saw this coming.

Our nation is in the midst of a salt shortage.

The election of Donald Trump has caused the millions of Democrat voters to go on a Margarita bender.

Billions of salt-rimmed glasses have been used over the past month.

I don’t know how cold a well-digger’s ass is, but it was minus 8 this morning here in Central NY State. We’ve had colder temps though.

When it’s like that I just get off the road as soon as possible. Especially when driving the 18 wheeler. The cab is warm and dry. It’s not like I’m trying to make it home on horseback.

"Our nation is in the midst of a salt shortage."

Something I saw on Bing news yesterday:

"A limited nitrous oxide supply is leading to a nationwide shortage of canned whipped cream that could leave your holiday pies bare."

Better stock up now!!

Colder than a banker’s heart here in NE Indiana. Changed my daughter’s car battery with gloves today, couldn’t feel my finger tips after a few minutes.

Gloves can replace a car battery? That’s amazing! How many cold cranking amps does a pair of gloves have?

Better to buy heavy cream and get out your wire whip. A little elbow grease and you can have all the whipped cream you want. It’s better than the canned kind too.
