"Friday's action keeps in place pollution reduction targets for the years 2022-2025. That means the fleet of new cars will have to average 51.4 miles per gallon by 2025, up more than 18 mpg from the 33.2 mpg requirement in 2015, the most recent year available."

These are ridiculously high mileage requirements, which would result in many Americans being forced to drive dinky, unsafe vehicles.

IMO, a more legitimate and beneficial goal for the Federal Government would be to come up with a national energy policy that focuses on exploration and production of energy resources, so as to provide a reliable and affordable energy products for the American people. That way, people would be able to afford to purchase the fuel needed for quality and safe to drive vehicles.

I am going to contact both the Trump transition suggestion site and my congress critters, as I am incensed that Obama would try to do this to American drivers and auto makers in the last few days of his term. Here is the Trump suggestion web site link:

Reduce the EPA’s budget to $0.00. Aw, heck with that...just eliminate the entire department. Better in the long run.

“fuel economy requirements that force the auto industry to make new cars and trucks significantly more efficient”

Fuel economy and fuel efficiency are two different things.

IF they could design a 3-ton sedan driven by a V-10 internal combustion engine (gasoline) that gets 30 miles per gallon, that would be a very efficient vehicular drive train.

When they design cars for mere fuel economy, they’re just trying to raise the average MPG per vehicle, which usually requires an increase in lightweight materials, low-mass components and smaller overall vehicle dimensions, not to mention the move away from internal combustion engines that run on gasoline or Diesel fuel.

“Even without the standards, industry analysts say automakers will have to make the efficient cars anyway to comply with strict mileage and pollution requirements in California, Europe and China.”

Yeah, and Trump/auto mfg. can tell CA to shove it up their a$$!

At the risk of getting flamed, 50mpg isn’t some impossible pie in the sky concept. There’s quite a few older vehicles that either achieved 50mpg or came very close to that. I had a Honda Accord I bought with just under 200,000 miles on it that got about 45mpg, and it was manufactured in about 1980. There were plenty of others too, such as the Civic and VW diesel Rabbit (off the top of my head). They were just run of the mill cars using technology that’s now 40 years old! Of course in today’s market it’s not so much the high mpg’s that hybrids get that’s the selling point as the holier-than-thou smug attitude club many hybrid owners are buying into.

50 mpg gasoline or diesel powered cars are easily doable for modern auto makers, but very few people, other than the “save Mama Erf” crowd, would spend the money on a hybrid while a standard gasoline powered car gets the same mileage.

The whole problem is Obama and the government MANDATING what auto makers should be producing, and then forcing those products upon us.

They’ve already destroyed diesel engines with their insane Tier 4 standards, why not gas engines next.

I think President Trump could cure this bit of insanity by directing the GSA to only purchase passenger vehicles that conform to the EPA’s latest fantasy.

Thank you for referencing that article mtrott. Please note that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

"The Environmental Protection Agency moved Friday to cement strict fuel economy requirements [emphasis added] …”"

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

Regarding the EPA, although federal environmental protections are aguably a good idea, patriots are reminded that the states have never expressly constitutionally delegated to the feds the specific power to regulate environmental protections. And previous generations of state sovereignty-respecting ustices have clariifed that powers not expressly constitutionally delegated to the federal government are prohibited to the feds.

In fact, another way to look at the EPA is the following.

Corrupt Congress is unconstitutionally allowing non-elected federal bureaucats, such as those running the EPA, to not only steal unique state powers to police the environment, but is also letting these bureacrats get away with using those stolen state powers to oppress the states and their citizens.

Drain the swamp! Drain the swamp!

Remember in November ’18 !

Since Trump entered the ’16 presidential race too late for patriots to make sure that there were state sovereignty-respecting candidates on the primary ballots, patriots need make sure that such candidates are on the ’18 primary ballots so that they can be elected to support Trump in draining the unconstitutionally big federal government swamp.

Such a Congress will also be able to finish draining the swamp with respect to getting the remaining state sovereignty-ignoring, activist justices off of the bench.

Noting that the primaries start in Iowa and New Hampshire in February ‘18, patriots need to challenge candidates for federal office in the following way.

Patriots need to qualify candidates by asking them why the Founding States made the Constitution’s Section 8 of Article I; to limit (cripple) the federal government’s powers.

Patriots also need to find candidates that are knowledgeable of the Supreme Court's clarifications of the federal government’s limited powers listed below.

The easiest way to increase fuel economy is to eliminate dirty burning ethanol from our gasoline.

Since the EPA is forcing the crushing of my VW diesel, I have been looking at new cars.

what a load of trash out there All with high back ends that cannot be backed up because of lack of visual field. All have very thin skins, that need to be serviced because they will not hold up under usual road wear.

Trash.

The EPA ruined washers and driers by having efficiency standards that make the machines not work efficiently or well. They have done the same to cars.

The EPA is an enemy of Americans I pray it is disbanded.
