Limpopo is not really a made up name, whether the Russian pranksters knew this or not, Limpopo is the name of a river in southern Africa and also a province of South Africa. The river is the northern and western boundary of that state (with Botswana and Zimbabwe) and then drains east through Mozambique into the Indian Ocean.
Given the strategic importance of Botswana, I am not surprised that Waters was alarmed by a Russian incursion there. I would be, one day Botswana, the next New Caucasia.
