The approach into Tokyo Bay from the south is damn difficult. Hundreds of skunks going all which ways. Usually in the dark for a morning arrival. Tough on the CO and Navigator. Been there many times.

That damage doesn’t look like it could cause her to take on water, yet you can see she is pumping. Is there more damage below the water line, I wonder?

Coastal waters can be very constricted. Lots of nasty rocks and sandbars.

Yokosuka (Yoko-ska, the U is silent) is the Japanese port the 7th Fleet uses. Spent many an evening there, although I was Army.
Ever see that movie Das Boat? Two surfaced U-Boats almost collided in a storm in mid-Atlantic (true story in book).
Very possible. Many of these ships have those bulbs that extend out beyond the bow, below the waterline. That would punch a hole in the hull of the Navy ship, yet you wouldn't be able to see it.
