Burke class. Big destroyer. Has two screws. Collision put both out of commission?
I’ve been reading some books about the Navy in WW2 and the surface battles. Those old Cans could take some punishment and keep steaming. Then reading about the Falklands and the ease with which a single missile could take out a destroyer is disturbing. Lots of aluminum now because of the increased weight from the electronics. Bad combination.
One funny thing is that antiship missile couldn’t penetrate even the bridge armor of a WW2 battleship.
Well I guess he’s a “Shu out” now. Badabing.
I was home ported there 69-70. Great enlisted men’s club.
Too bad they haven’t invented radar yet.
Not anymore.
5.56mm
Yup, the old Greek ram. I imagine that holed our ship like a paper punch.
Radar is less effective than you might think when the sea lanes are cluttered and there are lots of hills ashore nearby. If it’s choppy it’s even worse. You still need the old fashioned Mark One Eyeball.
Was the captain of the other vessel Jellicoe? ;-)
That captain is probably trying to locate a deserted island somewhere. He has probably already been removed.
My son is slated to be the Commander on this ship in 11 months.
"the container ship is sailing on its own by 7 am before the morning, towards Tokyo towards the northeast 10 km north east of Izu Oshima. On the left side of the bow you can see traces like bumping or rubbing against something."
Our 8K Ton Destroyer might sink, and the 20K Ton container ship just got a scratch.
Collision in open water. Massive damage on Stbd side.
Fitzgerald is headed back to port at Yokosuka, at a speed of approx. 3kn, assisted by tugboats. One injured heli’d off by Japanese Coast Guard.

Taking on water, making way to port at 4 kts.
Good times. A sea tour spent in the yards dealing with civilian contractors and a restless crew.
Neither radar crew on either ship were available for comment.
Pikers.
The laws of gross tonnage ALWAYS apply.
it's embarassing
I hope you are a better sailor than poster
