Personally I have no problem with someone who joined the National Guard or USAR to avoid RVN service, or had a job as a REMF messkit repair technician in South Dakota for his two years, (or shoveled sheet in Louisiana), or who never was called for active duty due to a high lottery number, but there is a special place in Hell and my hate for phony war vets!
Saw a guy in New York City with a MOH lapel pin about 10 years ago. He was fat, 40 and unfit. He said he received it for "a big battle in Saudi." At my "request", he removed it and threw it down the gutter drain.

I agree with you. The culture in the late 1960s and early 1970s was that no one wanted to be drafted to serve in Viet Nam. There were situations of recruiters getting their kids safe assignments. Look at GWB...technically risked being a war pilot, but there was no chance he'd be sent.
What was unacceptable was lying about ones military service. Blumenthal crossed that line, and doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong with that. The bigger question is what happened to CT. They really have a sorry state of politicians they elect.

Look at GWB...technically risked being a war pilot, but there was no chance he'd be sent.Really? I have a dead friend that thought that. He tried to convince me to join the reserves instead of enlisting as a regular. He said I was dumb for volunteering in 1971.
