This should be news to exactly nobody.
Yes, yes, yes and yes...which is why my child went to private schools.
It's no secret why Dems and liberals hate the idea of school vouchers, or private schools altogether. They don't like the competition, whether for students or thought.
IOW, if the motivation is there, even very low-income families can homeschool.
It's not just "what can you really afford?" More than that, it's "What do you really value?"
Or does the person who would do the homeschooling have enough education to even attempt it. That is an even bigger problem than perhaps the financial aspect of it.
She made sure they had lots of reading material in the house. She brought home armloads of library books and required him to read them to her. She asked him questions and required him to either answer or do the research and find the answer. She took him to educational places and events and conversed with him about what they were hearing and seeing. She encouraged him in any positive, constructive interest or hobby he had.
The truth is (and I know this from experience) what you don't know as a homeschool teacher, you learn right along with your kids.
The main thing is not being an omniscient, multi-skilled parent. The main things are motivation (lots!)and access.
And if you are motivated, you *create* the access.
Parents who are literal grade-school drop-outs can be magnificent homeschool teachers. You see this with a certain type of immigrant parent.
I'm not saying it happens all the time. But it happens.
“It’s not just “what can you really afford?” More than that, it’s “What do you really value?””
That is what it all comes down to.
1961 in Detroit, Michigan, a time when 11-year-old Ben Carson is doing poorly in school. His single mother, Sonya, who had but a third grade education, is distressed about the academic failures of her sons and decides to do something about it. First, she requires Ben and his older brother Curtis to learn the multiplication tables, and unbeknownst to them, checks into a mental institution to battle depression. When she returns, she realizes that her sons are watching too much television, so she restricts them to no more than two shows per week, requiring them to read books and write reports on them. She hides from Ben and Curtis the fact that she is illiterate. Sadly their mother Sonya is now afflicted with Alzheimers Disease.
I give her complete credit for the gift she provided them to unlock their potential. Love was the key, not educational knowledge. However, while not educated herself, she still realized the power knowledge can bring which benefited Ben & his brother Curtis who became an aeronautical engineer, enabling both to realize their true potential.
One never knows the potential they have, & without his mother's love & guidance guidance, the story could & probably would have ended much differently. Not because of any reason other than idle hands make the mind the devils playground.
She gave them a task to do & loving their mother they payed attention & obeyed her. Sadly much has changed since then. Mainly our education system corrupted those who are now mothers to believe their plight is the fault of someone else leaving them a victim.
Of course liberals, especially white ones, want to keep them from advancing, are all too happy to accommodate that narrative & give them their scraps. Which is why they demanded proof of his claims. If verified, it might give kids someone to lookup to & proclaim, if Be & Curtis can do it, so can I.
