Add to this festering pot of N.Korean brinksmanship is the fact that in 5 months, S.Korea will host the 2018 Winter Olympics (9 to 25 February 2018 in Pyeongchang County, South Korea). Pyeongchang County is located within Gangwon Province, at the northeast corner of S.Korea bordering N.Korea. Rifles will not only be seen at the Biathlon and there may be discussion about adding grenade toss to the calendar.

You're exactly right.

Yes, that's what frightens me.

I've thought about this for a long time and spoken at length with an ex-spook about it.

What bothers me most is I can't see any end-game acceptable to the United States that doesn't require the destruction or removal of the North Korean regime.

My take is that NK is secretly (not so secretly now) being backed by Chinese and/or Russian technology. Their end game is to see the US driven from the Western Pacific, with America's traditional allies (Japan, SK, Australia and Taiwan) all forced to recognize Beijing's hegemony over the Pacific in exchange for keeping Kim on a leash.

If we are forced to take military action against NK (and it's hard for me to see how that doesn't quickly escalate to turning NK into a glass parking lot), one payback for Chinese ought to be the sale of Tridents to Japan, nukes for Seoul (assuming it survives) and possibly Taiwan.

Let Beijing suck on that lemon for a long while.

... it’s hard to see why a double-freeze would not be a sensible first step. It would be largely up to China to see that the North Koreans complied with their part of the deal.

Utterly delusional, or working for China ?

IIRC we had a plan to wipe out 10 russian cites and the russian didn’t want that because of all the lives they cost last century. That was called Mutually Assured destruction. You point we don’t want a war with China and it is inevitable if we go to NK. i point not so much. If we wiped out the top 10 chances cites. stye might prefer to not have a war with us and enjoy the fruits of their economic growth and new age. I would tell China what i would do an for before i do it and then say, you had a chance to prevent this now we’re under threat and you can stand down or not, we’re stopping this insanity.

He might convince me by going into more detail. The problem with his analysis, as he wrote it and as I understand it, is that Kim may very well use hydrogen warheads against the US and others while we try further “diplomacy.” Assuming he uses three high-altitude thermonuclear bursts, and assuming that the forecasts for Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) effects are even fairly accurate, the US economy would be destroyed, along with tens of millions of citizens losing their lives.

Then what do we do, but nuke his entire country? By then it would only be a revenge attack, because the US as we know it would no longer exist. The author needs to go into detail on why William Forstchen’s book, “One Second After,” which lays out the worst case EMP attack on the US is completely wrong. https://www.amazon.com/Second-After-John-Matherson-Novel/dp/0765327252

Oh yeah, he wrote that in 1998. Just wow. I remember handing copies of it out to people who told me muslims were never going to try to take over the world. How silly of anyone to think a muslim resurgence was of any importance, they thought.

I just got two from Steyn, America Alone and er, the one right after it. Very difficult to read. And I don’t mean that I am having trouble reading them but that the horribly scary stats in them and the obvious conclusions are so painful to consider...

>> The United States should simply extricate ourselves from that region and let the Chinese, the Koreans, and the Japanese fight it out amongst themselves.

And you think if we do as you’ve suggested that insane dwarf will simply remove us from his hit list? If so, I have one hell of deal for you on a bridge up in Brooklyn.

“And you think if we do as you’ve suggested that insane dwarf will simply remove us from his hit list? If so, I have one hell of deal for you on a bridge up in Brooklyn.”

The warmongering neocons and the military industrial complex have been selling this country so many brooklyn bridges for so long that we’ve become bankrupt and near extinct. Endless war after endless war has done nothing to provide security for this country. In fact, the more wars we fight, the less secure we become. Its way past time we disregarded the warmongering bloviators and returned this country to its policy of non-intervention in foreign entanglements. Besides, if the Norks or anyone else decided to attack us, we’ve had the ability to deliver a nuclear holocaust to their land for decades now where ever they may be on planet earth. We just haven’t had the will to deliver it.

Interesting point - especially since so many of us disdained Obama for sticking it to some old and reliable allies.......
