Two forces in history—imperialism: small states become mega states and Balkanism: the break up of big states into small ones. We are now post imperalist world—big states becoming smaller ones due to tribalism and Nationalism (ie; Catalonia, Venice today). BUT sure as history is a template—a new form of imperialism will come forth and snap up states into new superstates. EU failed, USSR Failed, maybe China might make it work (they took Tibet—now looking at India and the south China Sea—next target Vietnam). Russia might make it work—Iran is making an effort—my money is on Egypt and South Africa and Brazil. Japan might go back into the Empire Business as well.
There's only one force at work there -- politics. Politics is always and only about power. That's rule number one; examination of other purported rules shows that they're restatements of rule number one, or somehow a subset of rule number one, or, and this is most likely, they are not really rules.
I was dumbfounded as a kid when I first saw a map of the pre-WWII world -- remember those great big windowshade-style multiple map things? Whole countries vanished, some got cut apart, some were new and carved out of devolved colonial holdings of the UK or France, astounding.
The current project and goal of Islamic states is to further splinter themselves, or better yet their own neighbors to A) weaken nearby rivals, B) create reliant neighbors and allies, and C) eventually build a numerical majority in the UN General Assembly.
