Example: Lazy B Jones gets $1500/mo to do nothing, or could go out and work for $8/hr for 40 hours per week for $1280/mo... so of course he will prefer to sit at home and watch TV.
Lazy B Jones could get an offer to do the same job at $12/hr for 40 hrs/wk, but that's still only $1920/mo... so he is working his ass off all month for just $420 (or really, nothing, because most of that will get taken from his check for taxes). He will still prefer to sit at home and play on he Xbox with his girl.
Employers now have to offer Lazy B Jones at least $15-$20/hr to do a job worth $8/hr before any reasonable person would even begin to consider doing it... and so prices for anything that is served, transported, stocked, or delivered will double overnight.
Everyone Loves Santa Claus.
Until you find out YOU are Santa Claus...........................
Alright! Lets get this show on the road. We’re going to have to settle this matter (individual rights vs group rights) sooner or later. I’m all for doing it sooner before we completely devour the productive assets and members of our country.
Half convincing in Charles Murray’s 100 page book “In Our Hands”. He advocates replacing the ENTIRE welfare state and money transferral system to $10k per year to everyone, including the rich. Throw out SSI, the IRS, etc. Anyone not paying their child support will pay. 2 people get together with $20k. It’s a start. Something to look into. The rats will do just that and they’ll offer it without cutting anything. A good way to leave out illegals and find other ways to cut. Electronically speaking just think of all the paperwork cut out.
.....Were not all socialists....were getting there. A majority of Democrats are, in any case.......
The Majority DimocRATS ALWAYS Have Been!
(In The Twentieth century anyway)
As well as the original Slave Owners in the USA
Under Murray’s plan Lazy B get’s $800/mo, not enough to get by.
Difference in the details but the idea of a Universal Basic Income program is Lazy B would get his $1,500 a month. If he decides to work he still keeps the $1,500. Under the current plethora of mean tested welfare state programs yes Lazy B. if he worked would lose the $1,500 in benefits; welfare, food stamps, gov't healthcare etc.
Yup. Everybody get a million bucks a year and everthing else is “free”. EVERY thing.
Atheists.
Add in Christian Socialists that populate the Mainline and Catholic Churches.
My friends. A young couple get minimum wage jobs and combine their Guaranteed Income. No other benefits such as welfare, food stamps. I call that a good start.
So, repeating myself, again: We either go to war soon or we go to the camps.
The current level of insanity in the West can only be dealt with by violence.
The dependent class is hopeless at math and budgeting and have zero self discipline.
It isn’t a start.
I will end up being “0”.
Just handing out money is just going to cause inflation.
If we’re going to have a massive welfare state anyway, may as well go with UBI. As you note, at least Lazy B Jones would not have the positive disincentive to work that we face now (start working, suffer a serious net loss of income). Roughly speaking, means testing results in $12/hr + welfare = $36/hr + no welfare; that’s a huge gap for the poor to bridge.
I don’t think the current welfare state will cede to UBI precisely because UBI requires no bureaucracy: everyone gets a check, no further paperwork needed. The current bureaucratic fiefdoms won’t give up to unemployment easily, doing anything they can to retain their meddling influence and continue the massive revenue stream.
The other unaddressed problem with UBI is that supply-and-demand makes that income worthless: $1500/mo being effortless to come by, the economy will adjust to consume it - basic goods & services rising in price, soaking it up and leaving the shiftless equivalently destitute. Easy come, easy go.
Finally there is the cultural risk of the productive “going Galt”. With enough people leeching off my productivity, and with a, well, guaranteed basic income, I may very well opt to live off the land, using my UBI check for mundane cash needs and otherwise foregoing a money-based existence. Surely I wouldn’t be the only one.
More likely the end game is guaranteed spending money.
(can still get some stuff done, but hopin' not to sleep on the ground again anytime soon ;-)
ct-Under Murray’s plan you will be leaching off others. EVERYONE-Bill Gates included gets his $800/mo, NOT $1500. Verify all eligibility by starting over from square one. Vote every year on whether or not to give a one time ‘bonus’ over the $800, conditional on economic growth.
