I followed that nasty election closely, but I missed that statement by the losing candidate. It required a recount and a County Clerk lost her job over it. Not because she did anything wrong, but just because her report was incomplete and little JoAnne claimed victory when she really had lost. (as I remember).

I always tell my kids it’s often difficult to judge historical figures. They lived in a society and with social norms that are very different from ours. They might judge us quite harshly too. We are human, we are imperfect. Hopefully we learn from our, and others, mistakes.

Upon reflection, this is the perfect reason why all the statues should remain so that the younger generation can be reminded of our history. It’s too easy to twist events of the past.

A little research into Lincoln’s biography reveals that his own father lent Abraham out as an indentured worker for other farmers and kept all the money himself. Thus, Abraham Lincoln knew what it was like to work as a slave.

Weird because you know what I think would be belittling? Driving through black neighborhoods and seeing how they live. Strolling through a prison. Looking at Africa and seeing that with out whitey, there'd never have been a building built or a technological advance, looking at the violence on that continent, the disease and suffering. But, hey, that's just me.
