Identity politics - the worst possible way to choose a nominee. Whether a writer is making the case that a party must nominate a man, must nominate a woman, must nominate a white, must nominate a black, or must nominate a trans-lesbian Latinx, the fundamental problem is identifying the choice by demographic rather than by merit.

Those values are considered racist now, but I miss the days when respected figures dreamed of judging others by the content of their character rather than reducing people to the color (or shape) of their skin.
