I was referring to college snowflakes, of which there are a great many.

Obviously, your daughter is not one of those.

Chicoms are still Chicoms. There is a large house church population of Christians in China, however as a government, communist philosophy, and people they are not our friends. American dealings with a China is dealing with the devil.

I still cannot get an explanation for dealing with communist China vs entering economic trade in an aggressive way with English speaking democratic India, an ally in the neighborhood with a population slated to rival that of China within the next 10-15 years.

We could sell our products and would not be seeking Chinese Teachers for our H.S. and colleges (high likelihood they are spies if near military or hi-tech locations). The Chinese are still Communists you know.

But wait, I’m not progressive enough to he truly unlightened.

As the old joke from sixty years ago went,....What is the meaning of a college degree BS, MS, and PHD?

BS=Bull sh*t
MS=More BS
PHD=Piled High and Deep.

Impressive class list, no doubt. BUT, what does she think about AGW? Has she swallowed the Kool-Ade?

I was mostly just rubbing you a bit. But I do think I got both your point and the one of the other poster you replied to. I do think that pointing to the Chinese, who even if they’re cheating, are interested in math and engineering as while many of our students want to stiludy less challenging fields. I also get that your daughter is an exception to the trends we’re observing. We need more like her.

Climate change is not taught or discussed at her school, thankfully, especially at the undergraduate level. Meteorology ( as she tells me) is separated from climatology which is the study of weather patterns over-time. Meteorology ( again at least at the undergrad level) is more concerned with short term forecasting from what she tells me. Now, her professors if pressed tow the party line, but they have to if they want the research money to continue to flow, but what they say privately is another matter.

A 15 act math score means you know no algebra. A 16 act math score means you can solve basic algebra problems like a simple linear equation. A 17 means you can solve basic ratio and proportion problems. You need an act score of 21 to be prepared for college algebra. Very few incoming freshman score a 21 or better on the math part of the act.

A terrible statistic. Pathetic. We are failing our children in math education. At my house we have done supplementation, tutors and online remediation.... One got a 26 and one got a 30.... two more kids to go.

Glad to see that there is at least one sane, conservative professor at Notre Dame, which, like Purdue, has become an employment center for hardcore leftists.

Look at the Kroc Center, among other places.

That would be a good start. I would even take a hard look at the reforms Norman Foerster was advocating in the 1930's and 1940's.

I once had a 1930s textbook with HS studies—including Latin, Greek, German, Trig, Calculus, European History—the works!

Just two inches thick, this college graduate doesn't understand most of it.

The left should be very worried when they start losing the Sociology professors!

Yet it was my Sociology 101 professor who asked the class (of about 60) on the first day (in 1961), "What do you think the effect of The Pill will have on American society?

I really stumbled for an answer. :(

You do also know that the Chinese cheat on college entrance exams don’t you?

hahahahaha

might have more to do with family and culture. My son has two friends that are brothers whose parents are chemical engineer in international company (Dad) and Mom is petroleum engineering professor. My son made a 96 on a chem test and I congratulated him. One of the brothers AVERAGED a 98 and my son said his Mom crossed her arms and said “why no hundred?” when he was at their house.

The other brother is considered a slacker because he’s ONLY majoring in biochemistry in order to get to medical school.

So the ALL Chinese cheat is a crock. I guess all the Indian kids cheat in the annual spelling bee, right? Culture, genetics and family are the recipe for academic performance. If a family thinks being popular or a jock is important, well then little Suzy and Bobby are going to just “rule” the party scene or the playing field.

If the Patel or Chang families think great grades and perfect test scores from pre-K to college is important and would dishonor the family..... guess what? They’re going to bust their humps studying.

I know for a fact that at least in Korea, there are after school programs for 3-4 hours that are nothing but SAT and ACT prep classes that kids start taking in what is our 7th grade.

I think that might have a little more to do with their scores instead of partying, drinking, soccer, football, baseball and cheerleading experts that most American high schools produce for colleges.

Think about how smart a kid would be if instead of playing sports he spent that time studying.

"My daughter is a meteorology major at a top school in her field..."

Has your daughter accepted the premise that AGW or "Climate Change" is "Good Science"?

If so, you/she have just poured beaucoup $$$$$ down a rathole...

See my post in this thread #28. They do not teach climate change/ global warming to undergraduate meteorology students. Climatology is graduate level course work and studies long term weather patterns, not short range forecasting. She has not drunk the cool-aide nor has it been served to her, thankfully.
