” “They have managed to propose nearly the impossible, taking over $200 billion worth of food from low-income Americans while increasing bureaucracy and reducing choices,” Berg says.”

Ever heard “Beggars can’t be chossers?”

You want the luxury of choosing what you consume, get a job and pay for it yourself.

Think of all the fraud that will be prevented. It could cut the cost of the program by billions.

Grandma is always sending her kids and other relatives to the grocery store with her card.

Rio Rancho (our town) is just on the edge of several pueblos. People on the pueblos have to drive a good 40 miles to get to the nearest grocery store here in town.

I recently found myself caught behind a three cart caravan checking out. The mama-in-charge had the EBT cards fanned out in her hand like playing cards and occasionally yelled "STOP!" at which point the check out girl stopped. The mama eyed the cards in her hand, picked out one, processed the payment, and then the checking out continued.

After she was gone, the checkout girl explained to me that they don't have many cars on the pueblos, gas is not free, so they send one person with sometimes a dozen shopping lists and debit cards to buy groceries for the neighborhood.

While I agree that bio-identified benefits would be ideal, we would have to figure out some way to handle situations like these.

Food delivery to their door would actually be an improvement.

lotto monies will dry up along with tax on alcohol...

...and cigarettes, and drugs, and used Escalades, and cell phones, and big screen TVs and bling, and motorized wheelchairs for hippos, and trips to Reno and Vegas...

Don't laugh.
I have used computers most of my life, from punchcards for mainframes to numerous minicomputers, many programmable calculators, to personal desktop computers to the current batch of personal computers. All in a serious engineering, urban planning , fluid mechanics, geodesy and structural engineering environment.

A few years ago I decided to take, for the first time, a formal multi-semester night adult class to learn Windows 7.

In a class of around 20 half were from a certain subculture.

After about two months, my "neighbor" was absent but returned the following week, explaining that he was absent the previous week because he and his wife had gone to Las Vegas, and had to call friends to send them money to be able to buy gas for their return trip.
He dropped the class a few weeks later.

By the time the class advanced to the next level, half the class had disappeared, never to return.

I recall that the couple in question had applied for and "qualified" for permanent disability, complete with fancy motorized wheelchairs...

Did I mention that they were both morbidly obese? Never went hungry.

It is an extreme insult to conflate being human to the weakness of becoming a permanent generational parasite of any kind.

I actually was on unemployment once for over a year, but even then received no other type of public assistance, and even then, although being human and imperfect, it never occurred to me to game the system or commit outright fraud.

Believe it or not, there ARE certain subcultures who do lie, cheat and game the welfare system without any evidence of conscience.

The poor have always be with us, but 50% of the total population?

WTF?

But that would damage their “dignity.”

By definition, some subcultures have no dignity.

Their dignity is violence or the threat of violence.
i.e. destruction, murder, arson, theft, assault etc...

Paradoxically, the Bible and the Soviet Union agreed on one thing:

You don't work, you have no place to live; you don't work, you don't eat; you don't eat, you die.

Is that too complicated?

Corollaries...

Charity freely given is a human virtue.
Compelled charity is tyranny.
Critical demand for help for the mentally, emotionally or physically crippled?
Only if means tested and confirmed.

My buddiy’s wife says “Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, it costs up to $100.000 as he buys ten or more different rods and reels, a bass boat, a cantilever tackle box full of expensive lures and such, and a new F250 to tow it, pays entree fees for tournaments...”

“...Maybe they should designate a checkout or two as “EBT line”.”

Or better yet, have a bell go off like for slots when they hit a jackpot in casinos.

>>Real question is what doesn’t outrage Liberals? They live in perpetual outrage... in or out of power. Outrage is their oxygen!
**********************************************************
This is a good question.

I think being communists, they are encouraged to agitate and upset the general status quo of capitalism, in favor of more gov’t expansion, spending and dependency.

By giving people food in place of EBT cards, it is one more step in helping to expose and reduce fraud, which works against their goal, which is to so bloat the gov’t it falls, leaving an opening for their communist “solutions”.

They could just gather up all of the healthy food that is being trashed daily in schools and give it to the needy. It’s already paid for, after all.

In Kansas, the sec of state did a very minor computer check, just to see how many names popped up as duplicate between Kansas and Missouri (we have a shared metro area, and it is very easy to sign up in both states at once). For his efforts, the sec of state was vilified, called racists, etc, etc, etc.

Which response was an unintended admission that they (the leftist whiners) believe that there will be a strong racial component in the violations discovered. How about that, Kansas and Missouri blacks? It shows what the white progressives really think about you!

ID the individual, and follow up with the others involved. Punishment for abuse should be swift, certain and painful (take away the Escalade!). Use some existing but useless government employees to do the job (like the "enforcers" working at the Do Not Call List, that federal jobs program for the otherwise unemployable family, friends and supporters of elected officials).

Hey, it's not like they were ripping off their fellow citizens or anything; after all, it is gub'mint money, right? < /sarc >

Very good point. All sorts of liberal assumptions (ie voter ID is racist) put their own racism on display.

“After he steals your fishing tackle!”

Then you can just shoot him and eat the fish he caught. Win/win.
