Adoption seems so tough for all parties involved; some adoptees thrive, while others have issues (IIRC, in this case, the shooter still had a relationship with his mother).

No. How does his adoptive mother paying $50k to adopt him as a newborn from a drug-addicted mother equate to "criminally insane"? I'm sure that are a shiitake-ton of kids born to drug addicted mothers, who are not criminally insane, especially those who were adopted as infants.

Cruz will obviously try, but have a difficult time in Florida with using the insanity plea. He premeditated his crime for months and knew that his actions would result in deaths. He knew killing was wrong and that he would face the death penalty.

He fits the definition of severely emotionally disturbed and should be held accountable for his action.

Florida death row averages 14.9 years. That is longer than the age of many of the children whose lives he took.
