Good question and I don't have an answer. But I know if I quit taking my meds or eat a bunch of carbs, my blood sugar climbs like crazy. Plus I have nephropathy.
God bless, brother. That’s my plan, too.
What kind of shots and what are the advantages? Just wondering. What was your result if you don't mind sharing?
Okay, if you are taking medication I get it. But if you are not taking medication and you get down to say 6.1, then at what point do you, “not have diabetes?” Or you always have it no matter what?
Thank you.
I’m getting conflicting advice about starting Metformin at the 6.0 % level.
When diagnosed, I was 9. Now I run around 6.
><
Good for you!
Mine was 10.6 when I was diagnosed 5 yrs ago. Six months later I had it down to 5.2 and it hasn’t gone above 5.3 since. One 5 mg glyburide each day and virtually zero carb diet.

Maybe, but they are mine. Did post YMPV...(your mileage probably varies) recognizing there are people who trust and are comforted. Not trying to change anyone’s mind, just offering .02. we get what we pay for.

You’re asking medical questions I can’t answer. Try Web MD or Wikipedia.
I take one 500mg tablet of metformin a day. On my last blood test my A1C was 5.4 and the Dr. said if it stayed down he would reduce the dosage. He started me as soon as my blood sugar hit 121 on the blood test because he believes in aggressive treatment. I’ve adjusted my diet and would be real happy if I could drop the drug completely.
>>Okay, if you are taking medication I get it. But if you are not taking medication and you get down to say 6.1, then at what point do you, not have diabetes? Or you always have it no matter what?
I guess you always have it, but if you can get down to 6.5 without meds, then you become fully diet-controlled.
I was able to go from an A1C of 8.5 to 5.3 in three months by cutting carbs to 20g per day or less. No drugs. I still drink, just not beer. Lost 40 pounds. My blood pressure is perfect and I eat bacon almost every day. Cholesterol is prefect too. Alot of what the drug companies and the government has been telling us for the last 60 years is bunk.
I was diabetic for many years and din’t know it. 4 years ago I had a heart attack and was told my A1C was over 12.
I’m on Metformin and Invokana (last 2 years). My current A1C is 6.7 and I feel great.
So Have I. My doctor would really like to control through diet and exercise, but my previous doctor started my at 6.0.
After we discussed he, the current doctor, said he didn’t mind me taking it, but cut back the dosage. It’s been working fine for me for a couple of years now.
Anyway, the diet and exercise thing ain’t gonna work for me, at his time, at least.
Good for you.
Over 35 years ago, before the A1C, my fasting blood sugar was routinely 120ish. I weighed much less than I do now, walked a hard 6 miles a day, and ate practically no sugar. Any GTT was negative. According to the clinical norms of these days I would be firmly diabetic. Oh, and my total Cholesterol was always 210+. Somehow I soldier on doing a full day’s labor most days in the middle of my 7th decade. An angiogram just a few years ago showed completely clean arteries. Guess I’m an exception for now but living on borrowed time.
Yeah, in a day and time of blame for everything and the continued desire to make money they have lowered the clinical norms to lasso in all possible fees and liability. I’ll leave it to the reader to decide on which is the greater motivation.
I can tell when I don’t follow a good diet so I try not to transgress too often with sweets, too many fats, refined products like white bread and just too much of anything save for good fruits, vegetables, nuts and a reasonable portion of meat and fish. White stuff is a killer. Just work to stay away from it all you can.
Thanks. You seem to have found the appropriate way to manage it. Best wishes.
I’m going to do what I can to manage it without Metformin.
Good for you!
Without carbs, what do you eat most of? I’m going to really cut the carbs and appreciate your response.
I dropped my AIC from 6.3 (which my DR said was “pre-diabetic”) to 5.8 in 100 days by changing diet drastically. Doc still wants me to get it under 5.5
