Good article.
I don’t think I’ve ever met a Progressive who could articulate a Conservative argument against abortion. Their mind is unwilling to grasp anything like that. When I’ve asked a Progressive to tell me WHY they think I oppose abortion, I’ve had people say things like: “You hate women and want to keep them subservient so that you can perpetuate the Patriarchy.”
And any attempt to enlighten them as to an more realistic Conservative position just gets cut off, “I don’t want to hear it! I don’t want to hear it! I don’t want to hear it!”
This is sad and scary on so many levels.
Some of us are the Typhoid Mary of Trump Derangement Syndrome.
We don’t get it, but we sure spread it to the liberals!!!
“This is why conservatives dont tend to express the same emotional hostility as the Left; a deeper grasp of the worlds complexity has the effect of encouraging intellectual humility.”
I think you’re right. A programed knee jerk conformity that requires neither intellectual capabilities nor any humility or respect for others. Total selfish emotions are the easy way. Those emotions are easy to manipulate.
I don’t try to convince leftists because they don’t have open minds. I don’t argue with them for recreation because I don’t want to help them improve their ability to present their case. I just ignore those on the left as much as I can. They hate me. They hate America. They hate God. They hate all Christians. Why would I want to interact with someone like that?
Well stated.
More generally the need to silence others is a key indicator that groupthink is occurring. Everyone should be educated about the symptoms of groupthink because it leads to spectacular failure. The biggest example of groupthink occurring now is global warming.
From wiki groupthink symptoms:
Type I: Overestimations of the group its power and morality
Type II: Closed-mindedness
Type III: Pressures toward uniformity
Need to read...
Quillette started as a place to publish articles, conservative and liberal, that others wouldn’t touch. Excellent site.
Dr. Jordan Peterson did excellent work on determining the distinct personality type of social justice warriors versus classic liberals.
Both groups are high on openness (worshiping novelty, raising it to a virtue) and agreeableness (avoid direct conflict, everyone needs to seem to get along).
Social justice warriors stand out for being high on neuroticism, as in correlation to anxiety disorders (the source of demands that everyone else make them comfortable backed by freak outs if you don’t).
And social justice warriors are high on the strict black/white morality, a trait more often associated with religious fundamentalists.
This is why they apply so many rules to everything from word choice to clothing to food and expect everyone to do it, because it is backed by hatred of the infidel for making things impure and disgust for those who don’t go along. A vegan looks at a meat eater as a Muslim does someone who eats pork; it is disgust and hatred.
Liberals are transferring the rules we used to apply to sexual purity to food and other areas of society, pretending that this makes them freer. But then they return to sexual purity, just requiring new rules like multi-layered consent to have sex but the sex of the partners and positions are irrelevant.
Talking to them or about them is pointless.
A bullet to the brain is the only cure.
Avoid all liberals at any costs.
Life is good without having to deal with them.
Yes. "Crybully" is a VERY useful new word.
Wish I could take credit for it but I didnt come up with it. It really hits the nail on the head for all liberals and socialists.
Well done!
No kin of mine.
Interesting article. Thanks for posting!
The reign in Speign falls meignly on the pleign!
I've noticed this - it isn't universal, but in general a conservative will ask you what you think, a progressive will tell you what you think.
So how and why have these activists become so intolerant and horrible to deal with?
Part of that, I think, is that passion and conviction are held as signs of virtue and principles tend to be universalized. The ironic thing about the latter is that the same people who follow unbending, universal principles also appear to be the ones convinced that there is no objective truth on which to base them. Curious.
