Well, obviously Georgia Tech didn’t design this one.
Well but still. “How to assemble a bridge and not have it fall down till it is finished” should be old hat.
Florida Bridge has fallen down
My fair lady!
Are there any engineers here who can give us some kind of opinion on the design of that bridge? Just looking at it, prior to the collapse, doesn’t give me a good feeling. It looks to me as if the span is too long for not having any supports underneath.
Yes.
Or at least, the construction plan....it is a new innovative process.
Dont like the sound of that! Fail.
Well there you go..incomplete supports. Crazy to let traffic underneath.
It broke at one end, not the middle.
Was it supposed to be propped up from below?
I’d have expected some kind of temporary supporting arch under it, narrowing a 2-lane area to 1.
It was supposed to be supported from above via suspension cables. Since that suspension points nor the other half of the bridge were set for counter weight for the suspension, the span should have been supported from the bottom.
Doesnt look so bad, at least in design plan. But this is not supposed to be finished until next year! So its only partway up and dont know how far theyve gone or what this new innovative (yikes) process is.
My guess is this process of manufacture (build) is faulty, and maybe they need to tweak this plan to actually work.
Something like a keystone arch under it might have let some traffic pass.
I can't imagine why it was installed in one long section without the mid-span support in place.
One would think so, but if you knew how many licensed plumbers have argued with me when I tell them gravity goes downhill, you would be amazed.
Which only goes to show me that they made the right decision. You see, what do I know about bridge design compared to the lunatic who made that decision? Nothing! Yet I would have included the support towers. Ergo, that lunatic made the right decision.
I actually fear that too. Our society has so little character now, how do we have the morals to support good habits including learning, earning your reward rather than just participation trophies, and having the conscience to do good rather than just get by for a paycheck?
Americans, including conservs, wonder why we cant have more Americans working these jobs instead of Indians and orientals. Our degrading society is why.
See post #31, which links to an earlier thread. There's a link to a site showing the proposed, completed design. There were supposed to be support towers and supporting cables depending from them, but they clearly aren't visible in any of the photos I've seen just after the structure was set up. Somehow I imagine they thought they could get away without them for the time being.
It was constructed using an innovative approach to bridge construction a technique meant to reduce potential risks to workers, commuters, and pedestrians and prevented traffic tie-ups in the area.
Wow. Really.
I demand more bridge safety laws. More back ground checks for bridge users and I want them NOW!
