I was stationed at NAS Alameda in the mid ‘80’s. I went to San Francisco a couple of times. Even back then Market Street smelled like piss.

They need another 1906 earthquake. That cleaned the city up last time.

I used to have an apartment up in the San Mateo highlands - delightfully boring.

I lived on Haight and Webster in the early 90’s and it was wonderful. I never had a bad experience walking to work in The Mission or just exploring the city on foot.

I think I got a sense it was changing in 92 as the leftist driven intolerance of anything not PC and “Revolutionary” was leading to a “whistling past the graveyard” sense of impending doom in the city.

San Francisco, while I haven’t been there in 15 years, sound like a pure shithole now.

21st and Valencia since 89?!?!?!

Wow! You’re certainly in the belly of the beast right there! Is The Chameleon still there? Are there other secret conservative people around there?

One of the first pieces of advice I received from a friend upon moving to San Francisco was that I should empty my car each night and never leave anything in my vehicle—not even a tissue box.

I witnessed someone breaking open a public trash bin in order to sift through the items.

Over the course of the last two years, I’ve reached out to the cops about hearing gun shots on my street at least five to six times.

last month, a man attempted to break into my apartment around 3 a.m. After about five minutes of banging on my door and fidgeting with the handle, he scampered off as I screamed the cops were coming.

I live in a reasonably decent section of San Francisco

In 1951, I was 4-years old and my Dad was recalled to active duty with the Navy for the Korean War. He was stationed at Oakland Naval Air Station, now Oakland International, and we lived on Alameda Naval Air Station.

San Francisco was a beautiful, almost magical place! Amazing what liberalism has done to it.

>>About two years ago, I moved to San Francisco from Manhattan in order to pursue a position in economic research

When an article starts with those words, I really can’t find any pity for the author.

Visited once in 1975 for Chinese New Year. Aggressive panhandlers, poop and pee on the sidewalks, stink in the air.

Lovely place, great restaurants and galleries and I see it has only become worse.

This is disgusting, she’s lived there 2 yrs, can’t stand the poop and pee, nearly had her apartment invaded at 3 AM, and has been followed and groped on the street. Are we supposed to feel sorry for her, continuing to stay in a literal sh!thole?

My folks and I sailed into Oakland back in 1961 after dad’s Army service overseas.
California looked pretty damned good at the time.

I was there in the late 60s and SF was great.

“San Francisco is officially a sh#thole.”

It certainly is and I live here since 1980. The drug addled bums are a protected species who assault, defecate and use drugs on your doorstep with impunity. The cops are overwhelmed and rarely show up unless there is active gunfire. You take care of the problem your self.

The car burglars are not only organized gangs with international ties but there are home grown ferals from Oakland and the east bay as well. They are now branching from car burglaries to home burglaries/invasions as well as street robberies. The PD has been neutered to a kind of social worker with a badge.

Market/7th is crack central as well as a one stop fencing operation market for smart phones. There are open air chop shops for stolen bicycles around some homeless encampments.

Haight/Ashbury is dangerous as hell as well as the area around the Lombard street steps. I refuse to ride Muni. It stinks and is unreliable.

BART stands for Beat And Rob Train riders. There is no “legal” CCW. Note I said “legal”.

All that being said if you are a local you can keep safe if you keep your eyes open, know what to look for and project an aura of hardness and know how to play “street poker”. Do not ever look weak. I have been the attempted target of street robberies x 2 over the years. Both were unsuccessful LOL.

The real victims are the tourists who commit mistakes like leaving purses/laptops/passports in their rental cars. Whats amusing is the people who attend these “community” meetings held by the Politicians and the police. They constantly bleat about how they need protection and clean streets and fed platitudes yet the same Pols are voted into office again and again.

SF resembles NYC in the early 70’s in some ways. There will be a Paul Kersey or the McManus brothers that rises up and then the local government will get off their dead a$$es if for no other reason than to deal with that.

Note to the author:

You might wish to get your facts or your memories straight-——

I have been eating In N Out burgers for over 50 years. Ate one a week ago yesterday. They DO NOT have a ‘special sauce’ and they never have done so. Don’t confuse McDonald’s with In N Out. Especially in California. You might not like the reaction.
