No it would not have. They, with their pistols, shotguns, and semi-auto rifles, would have been up against an armored brigade (30-40 tanks, dozens of APCs with mounted heavy machine guns and 500 hundred fully armed troops) in a confined space firing tank rounds, machine guns used armor piercing rounds with infantry also used armor piercing rounds on full auto for 72 hours continually - with orders to kill the terrorists and grind the bodies to pulp. Which they did. Then burned the pulp and used fire hoses to flush the residue down the sewer.
There were other troops (perhaps a few hundred) present with their weapons and APCs who fired back and ended up the same as the unarmed protestors, bystanders, bus riders, passers by, apartment dwellers, and news people. Civilians were barred entry into hospitals and official aide stations. Official dead over 2,000; unofficial dead over 10,000 ... wounded not counted.
Lest you think differently: learn the lesson from the Turks in Ankara in the 60s facing massed protesters - just bring in the air force strafe and napalm until well done; extreme brutality is as extreme brutality does, pistols, shotguns, and semi-auto rifles will not help, just prolong the inevitable a few hours, after which things will go back to normal and few remember what really happened.
