Guess what just happened? A lot of rain and the flood plain did indeed flood.
Volcanic islands don't have flood plains, dimwit!
Didn't you read the entire article?
All the water was gone in 24 hours.
As for building in gullies and other water courses, that's a self correcting problem!
Creeks and rivers are not flood plains even if they are dry most of the year, their outlet is a delta, and dump into the ultimate limitless flood plain...
It's called the Pacific Ocean, and no harvest mice or lizard habitats exist there longer than a year...
You work hard at this, don’t you?
The worst hit area had never experienced flooding like this. All the residents there fought this developer but lost and then they started changing the landscape, basically rerouting the usual runoff causing much damage to home and even the coastline. They called it a floodplain, I was merely using their words.
Heres a Facebook post from one of the residents nearby ...
I complained to the EPA, NOAA, USFWS, DLNR and County of Kauai over 100 times in the last 5 years saying that Hanalei will suffer major damage when we have out next flood because the flood plain on the east side of the river was raised 2.6 feet for a housing development and buffalo ranch!
The flood waters should fill up this 80 acre flood plain, but now that the flood plain was raised to dry it out the excess flood waters went through downtown Hanalei and out to sea across Weke road!
I also filed many reports and movies and shared those with our
government agencies showing how the Hanalei River mouth was clogged up due to the people altering the wetland. When it rains a lot the river cannot now handle the flow so it goes sideways and creates a new tributary.
This new branch of the river destroyed five homes, the Hanalei Pier parking lot and Weke Road!
This was all 100% avoidable if the laws were enforced in the Hanalei wetland.
The flooding went through the boat yard and washed away my own research dive boat! Now I have to do a research dive to go find my research dive boat! My dive boat that was lost in the flood was Steven Spielbers private boat he used in the filming of Jurassic Park and I have done over 500 research dives off of the boat here in Kauai.
Within the next week I will do a scuba dive in Hanalei Bay and shoot video of the houses, boats, fuel and dead buffalo covering the coral reef!
Today there were buffalo in the Hanalei River and dead buffalo at sea polluting the bay with all kinds of very bad bacteria! Plus tons of sewage from the ruined homes and Hanalei pier bathrooms.
So much sand was washed out of the Hanalei River that it filled up the bay and the pier is on dry land. The National Guard were launching boats from Hanalei to save folks in Haena and their helicopters were bringing supplies to the people stranded in Haena and also bringing folks back out.
The bottom line is this massive destruction of Hanalei Bay could have been avoided if the EPA, DLNR and County of Kauai would just enforce the laws about altering an important wetland!
Here are some pics from todays movies. I will do a full movie about this disaster and add it to my flood movies from the past that I showed to the DLNR and County of Kauai to try and prevent this current disaster!
It is a bit ironic that when I went to the boat yard to check up on my dive research boat, the only thing left of my boat was a video I did that was sitting on the river bank covered in mud. The video was all about the destruction of the Hanalei wetlands that I gave to the DLNR two years ago!
Aloha,
I’ll never go to Hawaii. I lived in a “tourist destination” it soured me on going to many places. People are disgusting in very large vacationing groups. I’d feel trapped on an island....
