Take the Time
May 12, 2018
Come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.
Luke 19:5
Rima, a Syrian woman who had recently moved to the United States, tried to explain to her tutor with hand motions and limited English why she was upset. Tears trickled down her cheeks as she held up a beautifully arranged platter of fatayer (meat, cheese, and spinach pies) that she had made. Then she said, One man, and made a swishing sound as she pointed from the door to the living room and then back to the door. The tutor pieced together that several people from a nearby church were supposed to visit Rima and her family and bring some gifts. But only one man had shown up. He had hurried in, dropped off a box of items, and rushed out. He was busy taking care of a responsibility, while she and her family were lonely and longed for community and to share their fatayer with new friends.
Taking time for people is what Jesus was all about. He attended dinner parties, taught crowds, and took time for interaction with individuals. He even invited Himself to one mans house. Zacchaeus, a tax collector, climbed a tree to see Him, and when Jesus looked up, He said, Come down immediately. I must stay at your house today (Luke 19:19). And Zacchaeuss life was changed forever.
Because of other responsibilities, we wont always be able to take the time. But when we do, we have a wonderful privilege of being with others and watching the Lord work through us.
How have others taken time for you? How might you show Jesuss love to someone this week?
The best gift you can give to others may be your time.
Jesuss ministry is a remarkable contrast to our tendency to live a fast-paced life pulled in countless directions. Even though everyone needed Him, Jesus never seemed to rush. In Luke 8, while on the way to a dying child, Jesus lingers to heal a woman in the crowd (vv. 4348), even though the child dies in the meantime (v. 49). Similarly, in John 11, after hearing His beloved friend was sick (v. 3), Jesus lingers (vv. 56). And in Luke 19, Jesus notices and takes the time to reach out to a man who had climbed a tree just to see Him (v. 4).
Jesuss example reminds us that we dont love others best through harried attempts to meet everyones needs, but rather when were fully present to those around us.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
JEROME KERN
Kern was a native New Yorker, born in citys brewery district in 1885, a child of German Jews. At the time of his birth, his father ran a stable; later he became a successful merchant. Jerome grew up on the east side near Central Park where he attended public schools. He showed an early aptitude for music and was taught piano and organ by his mother, an accomplished player and teacher.
In 1897 the family moved to Newark. Jerome wrote songs for his high schools first musical a minstrel show, no less in 1901, and for an amateur musical adaptation of Uncle Toms Cabin put on at the Newark Yacht Club in 1902. Blackface was in vogue at the turn of the century, and the word racism hadnt yet been invented.
Attempting to follow the path that George Gershwin was later to follow, Jerome dropped out in the spring of his senior year in 1902. Dad was furious and insisted that Jerome go into the family business instead of composing. But Jerome screwed up his very first assignment, which was to purchase two pianos for the store. Instead he ordered 200. Dad decided he could do less damage in music, so Jerome became a student at the New York College of Music, studying piano and harmony. His first published composition, a piano piece, appeared in the same year. From 1903 to 1905, he pursued his music education in Germany at Heidelberg.
Like Gershwin, Jerome became a song plugger on Tin Pan Alley and occasionally worked as a rehearsal pianist for Broadway shows. While in London, he secured a contract to provide songs for interpolation in Broadway versions of London shows. It was good money.
THE EARL AND THE GIRLIn 1905, Kern contributed the song, Howd You Like to Spoon with Me? to this hit musical when the show transferred to Chicago and New York in 1905.
Till the Clouds Roll By was a Hollywood biopic of Kern made shortly after his death in 1945. The very young Angela Lansbury dances her way through the song while an uncredited studio singer provides the cockney voice for this cute little gem.

Well, no hike, bike, or open mike today. Penny had an immunization (essential since we walk in the woods) and she was a little sore from her shot, so today was a couch-potato day for her.
Which suited me just fine too. :-)

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
JEROME KERN
THE GIRL FROM UTAHJeromes first complete score was Broadways The Red Petticoat (1912), one of the first musical comedy Westerns. By World War I, more than a hundred of Kerns songs had been used in about thirty shows, mostly Broadway adaptations of West End productions. The best known of his songs from this period is They Didn't Believe Me, which was a hit in the New York version of the The Girl from Utah (1914). This tune, four to the bar, departed from the customary waltzes of European influence and fitted the new American passion for the two-step. He was also able to use elements of American styles, such as ragtime, in his dance tunes.
This 1915 recording is a museum piece, and despite the poor quality of the acoustic recording, you get the sense of what music sounded like a century ago. Its in the eras style of a long intro and the song-proper as a chorus. Before the emergence of the crooner and electric recording in 1924, you had to belt the song operatic-style to get the acoustic horn to pick it up. Thats a tuba rather than a string bass providing the bass line. You can already get a feel for the kind of melodic beauty that Kern could produce.

I did go to an antique store today and got an electric guitar in a hard case for $30.00. The case is worth more than that. The guitar is a “basket case”, but will provide many hours of tinkering fun.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
JEROME KERN
THE GIRL FROM UTAHBy the Big Band era, the long intros had disappeared, and the performances concentrated in the chorus alone. Johnny Mercer would eventually write his own entries in the Great American Songbook, but he started as a performer. From 1942, this is a cool jazz performance before the term had even been invented.
